What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Structural Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Structural Engineer, you need a solid grasp of engineering principles, mathematics, and physics, usually backed by a bachelor's degree in civil or structural engineering and relevant licensure (such as a PE license). Proficiency in structural analysis software (like SAP2000, ETABS, or AutoCAD) and familiarity with building codes are essential technical requirements. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you collaborate with architects, contractors, and clients. These skills ensure the safety, stability, and efficiency of structures while facilitating teamwork and compliance with regulatory standards.

What are some common challenges structural engineers face when working on multidisciplinary projects?

Structural engineers often collaborate closely with architects, civil engineers, and construction teams on multidisciplinary projects. One common challenge is aligning structural requirements with architectural aesthetics and project budgets without compromising safety or functionality. Effective communication and early involvement in the design process are key to resolving conflicts and ensuring structural integrity. Additionally, adapting to changing project scopes and coordinating with multiple stakeholders can require strong project management and problem-solving skills.

What is structural engineering?

Structural engineering is a specialized branch of civil engineering focused on designing, analyzing, and ensuring the safety and stability of buildings, bridges, and other structures. Structural engineers work to make sure that structures can withstand the loads and forces they encounter, such as gravity, wind, earthquakes, and human use. Their work involves selecting appropriate materials, creating blueprints, and sometimes inspecting construction sites to ensure compliance with design specifications. Structural engineering plays a vital role in the safety and durability of the built environment.

What is the difference between Structural Engineering vs Civil Engineering?

AspectStructural EngineeringCivil Engineering
CredentialsRequires a bachelor's degree in structural or civil engineering, PE license often preferredRequires a bachelor's degree in civil engineering, PE license often preferred
Work EnvironmentFocuses on designing and analyzing structural systems for buildings, bridges, and towersEncompasses a broader range of infrastructure projects including roads, water systems, and urban planning
Industry UsageSpecialized within construction, architecture, and engineering firmsUsed across construction, transportation, urban development, and environmental sectors

Structural engineering is a specialized branch of civil engineering focused on designing and analyzing structures to ensure safety and stability. Civil engineering covers a broader scope of infrastructure projects. While structural engineers concentrate on the integrity of individual structures, civil engineers handle a wide range of infrastructure systems. Both roles often require similar credentials and work environments, but their project focus and scope differ significantly.

Job description

At ANS, weโ€™re not just a consulting engineering firmโ€”weโ€™re a team of trailblazers shaping the future of multi-disciplinary engineering. Recognized as one of the Best Places to Work and Top 10 Hottest Firm by Zweig Reports and featured in Inc. 5000โ€™s Top 250 for our staggering 1,748% growth, we're proud of what we've built and where we're headed.โ€ฏ
We're allergic to bureaucracy, thrive on innovation, and embrace data-driven decisions. If you love collaboration, creativity, and a fast-paced environment, we might just be your perfect match!โ€ฏ
ย
We are seeking aย Project Engineer - Structural with 5-8 years of experience to support the design and delivery of foundation and structural systems across a range of infrastructure and renewable energy projects. Youโ€™ll work closely with senior engineers and contribute to projects from concept through construction, with a primary focus on structural design for solar tracker systems, equipment pads, and site development structures.ย
ย
This position is ideal for someone with strong technical fundamentals, work ethic, and a desire to grow into a leadership role.ย
Structural Design & Engineering:
  • Participate in structural engineering efforts for utility substation projects including control enclosures, transformer foundations, dead-end structures, capacitor banks, and static mastsย
  • Review project documents and develop structural Basis of Design (BOD), including loads, design codes, geotechnical inputs, and material assumptionsย
  • Design and size shallow and deep foundations (e.g., spread footings, drilled piers, embedded posts) based on geotechnical recommendations and equipment loadsย
  • Perform load calculations (dead, live, wind, seismic) and develop structural models using accepted FEA tools (e.g., RISA, RAM, STAAD)ย
  • Coordinate with geotechnical engineers to integrate foundation performance assumptions and loading capacities (e.g., LPILE, MFAD inputs)ย
  • Prepare structural drawings, elevations, details, and specifications using AutoCAD and/or Revit for each milestone (30%, 60%, 90%, IFC)ย
Client & Vendor Coordination:
  • Coordinate with electrical engineers, control enclosure vendors, transformer manufacturers, and structure suppliers to obtain and interpret structural performance requirementsย
  • Support client-facing meetings to present a design approach and resolve technical commentsย
  • Review vendor-supplied structural performance requirements and incorporate into foundation and anchorage designย
  • Respond to RFIs and submittals related to structural foundations, design assumptions, and special inspectionsย
Other Areas of Focus:
  • Provide input on internal design standards, templates, and QA/QC processes for substation projectsย
  • Assist in developing resource plans, scopes, and estimates for future HV structural projectsย
  • Collaborate with civil and geotechnical teams to ensure fully integrated substation site designย
  • Stay current on relevant codes (IBC, ASCE 7, NESC, etc.), utility standards, and AHJ requirementsย
Team Collaboration & Growth:
  • Coordinate with internal geotechnical and civil teams for integrated designย
  • Attend internal design meetings and client calls as needed to stay aligned with project objectivesย
  • Receive mentorship from senior engineers with the opportunity to gradually take on more responsibilityย
  • Participate in internal learning, development, and project closeout reviewsย
While the focus of this role is in renewable energy, youโ€™ll also support general structural engineering work, including:

  • Analysis of structures for wind, snow, and seismic loads using ASCE 7 and IBCย
  • Structural design for deep and shallow foundations (e.g., spread footings, piers, caissons)ย
  • Design and detailing of framing systems and structural components in steel, concrete, aluminum, FRP, and masonryย
  • Structural condition assessments and live load evaluationsย
  • Coordination with manufacturers and development of foundation designs for prefabricated structuresย
  • Construction support including review of change orders, submittals, and field questionsย
