What is a structural engineering research internship?

A Structural Engineering Research Internship is a temporary position that allows students or recent graduates to gain hands-on experience in the field of structural engineering through research-focused projects. Interns typically assist with tasks such as conducting experiments, analyzing data, reviewing technical literature, and developing computational models under the supervision of experienced engineers or researchers. This internship is designed to provide practical skills, deepen understanding of structural systems, and prepare individuals for future careers or advanced studies in structural engineering.

What types of projects can I expect to work on during a structural engineering research internship?

As a Structural Engineering Research Intern, you'll typically engage in projects that involve analyzing and testing materials, developing computer models, and assisting with laboratory experiments. Interns often support ongoing research on innovative structural systems, seismic performance, or sustainability in construction materials. Collaboration with graduate students, faculty, and industry partners is common, giving you exposure to both academic and practical engineering challenges. This hands-on experience helps build valuable technical and teamwork skills while offering insight into advanced research topics.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a structural engineering research intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Structural Engineering Research Intern, you need a solid background in structural analysis, mechanics, and material science, often supported by coursework in civil or structural engineering. Familiarity with technical tools such as AutoCAD, MATLAB, finite element analysis software, and potentially experience with laboratory equipment is beneficial. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective teamwork and communication skills help you excel in both independent and collaborative research settings. These skills are crucial for contributing meaningful insights, ensuring precise data analysis, and supporting innovative structural engineering solutions.

What is the difference between Structural Engineering Research Internship vs Structural Engineering Engineer?

Job description

Position description
The Institute for Collaborative Biotechnologies (ICB) is an Army-sponsored University Affiliated Research Center (UARC). The ICB is a uniquely interdisciplinary research alliance led by the University of California, Santa Barbara, in collaboration with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the California Institute of Technology, and partners from the Army and industry.
ICB research is driven by more than 50 premier faculty working together with graduate students, project scientists, specialists, and professional researchers as interdisciplinary teams of biologists, chemists, physicists, psychologists, physicians, social scientists, and engineers. These teams develop biologically inspired, revolutionary technological innovations in systems and synthetic biology, materials science and engineering, biotechnology tools and cognitive neuroscience.
The ICB is actively seeking Junior Specialists to commit effort on ICB projects. This is a large, pooled recruitment covering many disciplines and research foci. Screening of applicants is ongoing and will continue as needed through September 30, 2026. The number of positions varies depending on the needs of the department.
