You may also use software like AutoCAD or Revit to create or update plans. Interns often work closely within multidisciplinary teams, gaining exposure to real-world projects and learning how to communicate technical information effectively. This hands-on experience helps you build practical skills and understand how structural engineering projects are managed from concept to completion.

What are Structural Engineering Internships?

Structural engineering internships are temporary positions for students or recent graduates to gain hands-on experience in the field of structural engineering. Interns typically assist professional engineers with tasks such as drafting plans, conducting site visits, performing calculations, and learning industry software. These internships help interns apply classroom knowledge to real-world projects, develop technical and communication skills, and build professional networks. Completing an internship can significantly improve job prospects after graduation.

Job description

Structural Engineering Intern - Praxis Engineering

Ideas Into Action.

Location: San Luis Obispo, CA

Employment Type: Part-Time

About Praxis Engineering:

Praxis is a civil and structural engineering firm working on a diverse mix of projects across California: commercial, mixed-use, wineries and hospitality, multi-family, custom residential, and bridges. We're looking for a structural engineering intern to join our San Luis Obispo office this summer.

What you'll do:

Work alongside our structural team on active projects. Expect to:

  • Draft plans and exhibits in CAD under the direction of our project engineers
  • Support basic structural calculations
  • Revise and update drawings as designs evolve
  • Join site visits and construction-phase observations when schedules align
  • Learn how agency specifications and standards shape real projects

Who we're looking for

  • Sophomore or junior pursuing a degree in Civil or Structural Engineering
  • Coursework in statics, strength of materials, structural analysis and CAD experience from class or a prior internship
  • Curious, collaborative, and willing to ask questions
  • Clear written and verbal communicator
  • Valid Class C driver's license for occasional site visits

Why Praxis:

We're a small firm with a wide project portfolio, which means interns get real exposure, not just one narrow slice of work. You'll be mentored by licensed engineers on projects that range from custom homes to $80M+ hospitality work. For the right person, this internship is a pipeline to a full-time role after graduation. Flexible around your academic calendar; part-time continuation during the school year possible.

To apply:
