Mid-Level MEP Designer

Full-Time | On-Site | Monday-Friday, 7:30 a.m.-4:00 p.m. Central Time

The Opportunity

DOTec is seeking a Mid-Level MEP Designer to develop coordinated building-system designs and construction documents under the direction and responsible charge of licensed Professional Engineers. Candidates may bring primary depth in mechanical, electrical, or plumbing design, but should be prepared to coordinate effectively across the complete MEP scope.

This role is suited to a designer who can independently advance defined assignments, prepare reliable calculations and documents, recognize cross-discipline conflicts, and bring technical questions forward before they affect delivery. The position offers broad project exposure, hands-on mentoring, and a clear path toward greater technical and project responsibility.

What You Will Do

1. Develop assigned mechanical, electrical, and/or plumbing systems from established criteria through construction documents, with primary responsibility aligned to demonstrated discipline competence.
2. Prepare applicable load calculations, equipment selections, layouts, one-line diagrams, schedules, controls information, ductwork, piping, distribution, lighting, power, domestic-water, sanitary, storm, and related system documentation.
3. Create and maintain coordinated Revit models and AutoCAD drawings; develop plans, sections, details, schedules, notes, and diagrammatic information using DOTec standards.
4. Apply adopted building, mechanical, plumbing, electrical, energy, accessibility, and life-safety requirements under senior technical direction and document the basis of design.
5. Coordinate systems with architecture, structure, civil, fire protection, utility information, equipment clearances, ceiling conditions, penetrations, and maintainable access.
6. Self-check calculations and documents, resolve quality-control comments, and identify conflicts, missing criteria, and scope or constructability concerns before issuance.
7. Support surveys, site observations, permit responses, RFIs, submittal reviews, field conditions, and record-document updates under the assigned licensed professional.
8. Plan assigned tasks, maintain organized project files, communicate progress and risks, and contribute to standards, templates, details, and development of junior staff.

What Success Looks Like

1. Assigned systems are code-aligned, coordinated, constructible, and supported by clear calculations and basis-of-design records.
2. Models, drawings, and schedules remain synchronized, and coordination issues are identified before formal review or issuance.
3. Tasks progress predictably, quality-control comments are resolved thoroughly, and technical independence increases over time.

Required Qualifications

1. Bachelor's or associate degree in mechanical, electrical, architectural, or building-systems engineering, engineering technology, design technology, or a related field; equivalent relevant education and experience may be considered.
2. Three (3) or more years of relevant building-systems design experience, with demonstrated depth in at least one of the mechanical, electrical, or plumbing disciplines.
3. Working familiarity with the interfaces among HVAC, electrical power and lighting, plumbing, fire protection, architecture, structure, and applicable utility services.
4. Familiarity with applicable building-system requirements, such as the IBC, IMC, IPC, NEC, NFPA standards, energy codes, and accessibility criteria.
5. Proficiency with Revit and AutoCAD and experience with discipline-appropriate calculation, equipment-selection, lighting, load-analysis, or design software.
6. Strong communication, documentation, self-checking, coordination, and problem-solving skills; regular on-site attendance and occasional project travel.

Preferred Qualifications

1. Engineer Intern or Engineer-in-Training certification, industry credentials, or active progress toward professional licensure.
2. Experience producing coordinated multidisciplinary BIM deliverables for commercial, institutional, multifamily, industrial, or renovation projects.
3. Experience with energy analysis, controls coordination, commissioning support, construction administration, or existing-building surveys.

Work Location and Schedule

This is a full-time, on-site position at DOTec's St. Charles, Missouri office. The regular schedule is 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Central Time, Monday through Friday. On-site presence is essential for multidiscipline model coordination, technical collaboration, mentoring, and access to project teams, equipment information, and controlled design records; no routine remote or hybrid arrangement is available. Occasional approved project travel, site visits, or meetings outside the office may be required. DOTec will consider reasonable accommodations as required by applicable law.
