What is a structural engineer in training?

A Structural Engineer In Training (EIT) is an entry-level professional who has completed an accredited engineering degree and passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam. EITs work under the supervision of licensed structural engineers to gain practical experience and develop their technical skills. Their responsibilities often include assisting with the analysis and design of building structures, preparing drawings and reports, and learning building codes and standards. The EIT designation is a step toward becoming a licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in structural engineering.

What types of projects and responsibilities can a structural engineer in training expect during their first year on the job?

As a Structural Engineer In Training, you will typically support senior engineers in tasks such as drafting structural plans, performing basic calculations, and assisting with site inspections. You may work on a variety of projects, including residential, commercial, or infrastructure developments, which helps you build a broad foundation of experience. Your role often involves close collaboration with architects, contractors, and other engineering disciplines to ensure project requirements are met. Additionally, you'll likely participate in team meetings and may be given increasing responsibility as you demonstrate competence, setting the stage for advancement toward a licensed Professional Engineer position.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a structural engineer in training, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Structural Engineer In Training, you need a solid grasp of engineering principles, structural analysis, and design, typically supported by a bachelor's degree in civil or structural engineering and an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification. Familiarity with industry-standard software such as AutoCAD, Revit, and structural analysis tools like SAP2000 or STAAD.Pro is essential. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you collaborate with senior engineers and multidisciplinary teams. These competencies are vital for ensuring safe, efficient, and code-compliant structural designs while building a foundation for professional growth.

What You'll Do:

As a Structural Engineer, you will perform structural analysis and design, prepare construction documents, support construction administration activities, and collaborate with internal and external project stakeholders to deliver high-quality engineering solutions. You will work independently on assigned tasks while receiving guidance and mentorship from senior engineers on larger or more complex projects.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform structural analysis and design for steel, reinforced concrete, masonry, timber, and other structural systems for new construction, renovations, and additions.
  • Prepare engineering calculations, technical reports, specifications, and construction documents in accordance with applicable codes and standards.
  • Develop structural models, plans, sections, details, and project documentation utilizing Revit and other engineering software.
  • Coordinate structural designs with architectural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and other project disciplines.
  • Participate in field investigations, condition assessments, and evaluations of existing structures.
  • Support construction administration activities, including responding to RFIs, reviewing submittals, and assisting with resolution of field-related issues.
  • Collaborate with clients, contractors, architects, and project teams to ensure successful project execution.
  • Assist with project planning, scheduling, budgeting, and quality control efforts.
  • Mentor and support junior engineers and technical staff as appropriate.
  • Participate in site visits and occasional travel for project meetings, assessments, and construction observations.

What You'll Bring:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or Architectural Engineering required; Master’s degree preferred.
  • Minimum 3–7 years of structural engineering experience.
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT/EI) certification required; Professional Engineer (PE) or Structural Engineer (SE) licensure preferred.
  • Due to the projects associated with this position, U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Experience designing structural systems utilizing steel, concrete, masonry, and timber.
  • Working knowledge of structural analysis and design software such as Revit, RISA, Enercalc, RAM, or similar platforms.
  • Experience supporting federal, public sector, education, wastewater, industrial, restoration, or similar facility projects preferred.
  • Strong understanding of structural engineering principles, building systems, construction materials, and construction means and methods.
  • Knowledge of applicable local, state, and national building codes and design standards.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments and work effectively in a deadline-driven environment.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
