How much do structural dynamics jobs pay per year?

As of Aug 15, 2026, the average yearly pay for structural dynamics in California is $98,098.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $79,000.00 and $111,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in structural dynamics, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Structural Dynamics often encounter challenges such as accurately modeling complex structures, managing the effects of dynamic loads, and ensuring compliance with evolving industry standards. Addressing these issues typically involves staying up to date with the latest simulation software, collaborating closely with multidisciplinary teams (such as civil engineers and architects), and continuously expanding technical knowledge through professional development. Open communication and teamwork are crucial when solving unexpected dynamic responses or integrating new materials into structural designs.

What is structural dynamics?

Structural dynamics is the study of how structures respond to loads that change with time, such as wind, earthquakes, or moving vehicles. It involves analyzing and predicting the behavior of buildings, bridges, and other structures when subjected to dynamic forces to ensure safety and performance. Professionals in this field use mathematical models and simulations to understand vibrations, resonance, and potential failure modes. This knowledge is crucial for designing structures that can withstand unpredictable or extreme events.

What is the difference between Structural Dynamics vs Structural Analysis?

AspectStructural DynamicsStructural Analysis
FocusStudy of structures under dynamic loads like earthquakes and windAssessment of structures under static or steady loads
Required CredentialsEngineering degree, possibly specialized training in dynamicsEngineering degree, often with structural analysis certification
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, consulting firms, construction sitesDesign offices, consulting firms, construction sites
Industry UsageEarthquake engineering, aerospace, civil engineeringBuilding design, infrastructure projects, safety assessments

Structural Dynamics focuses on how structures respond to dynamic forces like earthquakes, while Structural Analysis evaluates how structures bear static loads. Both roles require similar credentials and are used across civil engineering and construction industries, but their applications differ based on the type of loads considered.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a structural dynamics engineer?

To thrive as a Structural Dynamics Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical or civil engineering, with expertise in vibration analysis, finite element modeling, and a relevant engineering degree. Proficiency in technical tools such as MATLAB, ANSYS, and other simulation software, along with knowledge of industry codes and possibly a Professional Engineer (PE) license, is often required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills distinguish top performers in this field. These competencies are crucial for ensuring the safety, reliability, and performance of complex structures in applications like aerospace, automotive, and civil infrastructure.

Job Description:
Location: San Francisco/Hybrid
Department: Structural & Mechanical Engineering
Employment Type: Contractor full-time, convertible to salaried full-time.
About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Senior Dynamics Engineer to serve as a technical anchor and leader within our engineering organization. In this role, you will act as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) for machine dynamics, rotordynamics, and structural vibrations, guiding the development process and driving engineering best practices across the department. You will lead design optimization for both rotating and stationary components, coordinate cross-functional systems integration, and spearhead advanced modal, transient, and rotordynamic analyses to ensure system stability and longevity.
This position requires a unique blend of deep analytical expertise in the dynamics of machinery, technical leadership, and a proven track record of managing complex engineering configurations.
Key Responsibilities
● Process & Best Practices Leadership: Manage the overall dynamics and vibration development process and actively establish, document, and drive engineering best practices.
● Component Design & Support: Contribute to design and optimization activities for complex components and provide analytical support and cross-functional coordination to other engineering groups regarding vibration mitigation and balance.
● Advanced Rotordynamics & Vibration Analysis: Support numerical dynamic analysis activities, including critical speed determination, forced response, stable operating margins, and bearing/seal design for high-speed rotating hardware.
● Failure Modes & Effects Analysis (FMEA): Carry out complex FMEAs and advanced analytical problem-solving involving aeroelasticity, low-cycle fatigue (LCF), high-cycle fatigue (HCF), and rotor dynamic response problems.
● Subject Matter Expertise: Serve as the organization's technical authority on machine dynamics, mechanical vibrations, rotordynamics, and numerical dynamic simulation.
Education & Experience Requirements
Education
● Minimum: Bachelor"s degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering.
Core Experience
● Technical Leadership: 15+ years of engineering and technical leadership experience, with a proven track record of coordinating various functional groups and managing systems integration.
● Dynamics & Machine Lifing: 10+ years of dedicated experience performing structural dynamics, rotordynamics, and vibration-related lifetime assessments for static and rotating components, explicitly including resonant response and high-cycle fatigue.
● Desirable Asset: Prior experience with Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI)/aeroelasticity (such as blade flutter) is highly desirable.
Technical Skill Requirements
● Core Mechanics: Advanced, deep-rooted knowledge of the dynamics of machinery, rotordynamics, and mechanical vibrations.
● Computational Methods: Detailed, foundational understanding of Finite Element Analysis (FEA) for structural dynamics, multi-body dynamics, and numerical methods.
● CAD Tools: Proficiency with standard 2D/3D CAD software (Onshape preferred).
● Technical Computing & Simulation (Preferred): Strong proficiency in software development and technical computing for automation or analysis, specifically with:
○ Python
○ Matlab
What We Offer
● Competitive compensation and comprehensive benefits package.
● A high-visibility leadership role with direct influence over product development processes and team standards.
