Structural Bim Designer information

What is a structural BIM designer?

Structural BIM Designers are professionals who use Building Information Modeling (BIM) software to create detailed digital representations of a building’s structural systems. They collaborate with architects, engineers, and construction teams to design, document, and coordinate the structural elements of a project, such as beams, columns, and foundations. Their work helps improve accuracy, efficiency, and collaboration during the planning and construction phases. Additionally, Structural BIM Designers ensure that the digital models comply with relevant building codes and standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a structural BIM designer?

To thrive as a Structural BIM Designer, you need in-depth knowledge of structural engineering concepts, proficiency in drafting, and typically a degree in civil engineering or a related field. Expertise in BIM software such as Autodesk Revit, Navisworks, and knowledge of industry standards like BS EN and AISC codes are essential, and certifications in BIM are often advantageous. Strong attention to detail, teamwork, and effective communication skills help facilitate coordination with multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders. These skills ensure accurate, efficient design processes and seamless collaboration, which are critical for successful project delivery.

How does a structural BIM designer typically collaborate with engineers and other project stakeholders?

Structural BIM Designers work closely with structural engineers, architects, and construction teams to develop accurate and coordinated digital models of building structures. Collaboration is often facilitated through regular meetings, shared model reviews, and cloud-based platforms that allow for real-time updates and feedback. This teamwork ensures that any design changes are quickly communicated and incorporated, helping to minimize errors and streamline the construction process. Effective communication and a proactive approach to resolving clashes or design conflicts are key aspects of the role.

What is the difference between Structural Bim Designer vs Structural Engineer?

AspectStructural Bim DesignerStructural Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires a diploma or associate degree in CAD, BIM, or related fieldsRequires a bachelor's degree in civil or structural engineering, often licensed
Work EnvironmentPrimarily uses BIM software for modeling and drafting in design teamsDesigns, analyzes, and oversees structural systems, often in office and field settings
Industry UsageCommonly employed in architecture, construction, and design firmsFound in engineering consulting firms, construction companies, and project management

The main difference is that a Structural Bim Designer focuses on creating detailed 3D models and drawings using BIM software, while a Structural Engineer is responsible for structural analysis, design, and ensuring safety compliance. Both roles collaborate closely but serve distinct functions within the construction and design process.

Are Structural Bim Designers in demand?

Structural Bim Designers are in increasing demand due to the growing adoption of Building Information Modeling (BIM) in construction projects. Their skills in creating detailed 3D models and collaborating with architects and engineers are highly valued, leading to job growth in architecture, engineering, and construction industries.

What is the average salary for a structural BIM designer in the US?

The average salary for a structural BIM designer in the US typically ranges from $60,000 to $90,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and certifications. Professionals skilled in Revit and AutoCAD with several years of experience tend to earn toward the higher end of this range.

Job description

Hazen and Sawyer is seeking a CAD/BIM Designer to work alongside project managers and engineers to produce structural BIM (Revit) models, families, and contract drawings for the structural discipline.

The ideal candidate will be proficient in the use of Autodesk Revit with experience in the creation of models, families and contract drawings. The candidate will have experience leading the model and contract drawing development effort for projects, including performing interdisciplinary clash detection and the reconciliation of conflicts as well as ensuring that standards are adhered to. AutoCAD/Civil 3D proficiency would be of benefit.

Why Hazen and Sawyer:

  • Founded in 1951 by the son of Allen Hazen (developer of the Hazen-Williams equation), we are an employee-owned company with a singular focus on "all things water."
  • Our work includes planning, design, and oversight of construction of environmental infrastructure – for water, wastewater, and stormwater management.
  • We foster a work environment low on bureaucracy and high in creativity.
  • We recruit talented professionals, provide them with challenging, interesting, and creative assignments, and furnish them with the tools they need to succeed.
  • We currently have over 2,000 employees in 70+ offices throughout the United States, Latin America, Canada, and the UK.

Position responsibilities will include but not limited to:

  • Developing Revit models, families, and contract documents
  • Coordinating contract drawing development with multiple disciplines
  • Performing BIM model clash detection and working with various disciplines to resolve conflicts
  • Training/mentoring less experienced designers
  • Reviewing models and drawings for less experienced designers
  • Providing input on CAD/BIM standards and workflows

Qualifications:

  • Relevant bachelor’s degree and 6 to 10 years of experience — or an associate degree/technical certification and 6 to 10 years of experience.
  • Proficiency in Autodesk Revit
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD/Civil 3D would be a benefit
  • Experience leading and coordinating drawing production for medium and large sized projects.

What We Offer:

  • Comprehensive health benefits (medical, dental, vision, and prescription plans)
  • Pre-tax flexible spending plans for medical, dependent care, and transportation
  • Short and long-term disability, and employer paid life insurance
  • Paid holidays, floating holidays, and paid time off (PTO)
  • Employer-contributed 401(k) plan and additional financial planning support
  • Professional growth opportunities, including tuition reimbursement, in-house training, and incentives for professional registration and professional organization memberships
  • Starting pay range for this position depends on skills, experience, education and geographical location
