What does a structural analysis engineer do?

As a structural analysis engineer, you test equipment, buildings, and manufactured products to determine whether or not they meet performance goals, standards, regulations, and requirements. You may perform a stress test on various materials, monitor construction data, evaluate equipment or design blueprints, and otherwise help to ensure the final product is structurally sound. Most structural analysis engineers focus on building construction, but some work with aircraft, cars, or other heavy equipment instead. This job is highly time-sensitive because construction often cannot proceed until structural analysis checks are done. So, the ability to work quickly and efficiently is essential to success in this role.

What does a structural analysis engineer do?

A Structural Analysis Engineer is responsible for evaluating the strength, stability, and rigidity of structures such as buildings, bridges, aircraft, and other frameworks. They use mathematical models, computer simulations, and physical testing to ensure designs can withstand various loads and stresses during their lifespan. Their work helps prevent structural failures and ensures compliance with safety codes and standards. Structural Analysis Engineers often collaborate with architects, designers, and construction teams to optimize material use and design efficiency.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a structural analysis engineer?

To excel as a Structural Analysis Engineer, you need a strong background in civil or mechanical engineering, expertise in structural mechanics, and a relevant engineering degree, often with a Professional Engineer (PE) license. Familiarity with finite element analysis (FEA) software such as ANSYS or Abaqus, as well as CAD and simulation tools, is typically required. Analytical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication are vital soft skills that help engineers interpret data and work collaboratively. These skills ensure the safe and efficient design, evaluation, and optimization of structures, which is critical for public safety and project success.

What are some common challenges faced by structural analysis engineers when working on multidisciplinary projects?

Structural Analysis Engineers often collaborate with teams from mechanical, electrical, and architectural disciplines. A common challenge is ensuring that structural requirements are balanced with other project needs, such as space constraints or integration with non-structural systems. Effective communication and early involvement in project planning help address potential conflicts and ensure that safety and performance standards are met without delays. Adaptability and strong teamwork skills are essential for navigating these complex, collaborative environments.

What is the difference between Structural Analysis Engineer vs Civil Engineer?

AspectStructural Analysis EngineerCivil Engineer
Primary FocusAnalyzing and designing structural components and systemsDesigning, constructing, and maintaining infrastructure like roads, bridges, and buildings
CertificationsFE/EIT, PE (Structural)FE/EIT, PE (Civil)
Work EnvironmentEngineering firms, construction sites, consultingConstruction sites, government agencies, consulting firms
Industry UsageCommon in structural design projectsBroader, includes structural but also transportation, environmental, and geotechnical

While both roles require engineering credentials and often work in similar environments, Structural Analysis Engineers specialize in analyzing and designing structural components, whereas Civil Engineers have a broader scope including infrastructure and environmental projects. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right career path or job search focus.

Structures Analysis Lead

Ghostworks Marine

Holland, MI โ€ข On-site

Full-time

Posted 22 days ago

Job description

Ghostworks Marine builds specialized, high-performance composite vessels for commercial and U.S. Navy customers. As we scale from individual program builds to a multi-program operation, we're adding senior technical depth to ensure the structural integrity of every vessel we design and build — from first-article prototypes to established platform families.

Position Summary

The Structures Analysis Lead is a senior individual-contributor role serving as the company's top technical authority on structural analysis of composite marine vessels. This roll sets analysis methodology and standards for the team, and mentors Structures Analysts across all levels. The role reports to engineering leadership and works closely with naval architecture, manufacturing, and program management to ensure structures are analyzed to the rigor required for both commercial classification and military acceptance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as final technical reviewer and approver for structural analysis deliverables, including hand calculations, finite element models, and load case development.
  • Establish and maintain structural analysis methodology, standards, and best practices across the Structures Analyst team.
  • Lead analysis of primary and secondary structure — hulls, decks, bulkheads, foundations, and appendages — for composite construction under both commercial and military requirements.
  • Define and validate load cases (static, dynamic, slamming, fatigue) appropriate to vessel type and service profile.
  • Review and approve analysis performed by Structures Analysts I–V, providing technical mentorship and structured feedback.
  • Interface directly with classification societies and military technical authorities on structural certification and acceptance matters.
  • Partner with Naval Architecture and Manufacturing to resolve structural design and build issues, including material substitutions and repair dispositions.
  • Own structural analysis documentation standards, ensuring traceability and audit-readiness for both commercial and government customers.
  • Identify and drive continuous improvement in analysis tools, processes, and methods as the company scales across multiple concurrent programs.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Structural, Mechanical, or Aerospace Engineering, or equivalent experience.
  • Significant hands-on experience in structural analysis of composite marine or aerospace structures, including finite element analysis.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently own structural analysis from load case definition through final sign-off.
  • Strong working knowledge of composite material behavior, laminate theory, and failure modes.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with one or more of the following classification society scantlings rules: ISO 12215, DNV HSLC, Bureau Veritas.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain technical rationale to non-technical stakeholders.
  • S. Citizenship required due to government contract requirements.

Preferred

  • Experience mentoring or informally leading junior analysts.

Additional Information

  • This position is based on-site in Holland, MI. Relocation assistance is not provided; candidates must currently reside within a commutable distance or be willing to relocate at their own expense.
  • Due to the nature of our government contracts, this position requires U.S. Citizenship.
