What is strength training?

Strength training is a type of physical exercise focused on improving muscle strength and endurance by working against resistance. This can include using free weights, weight machines, resistance bands, or even your own body weight through exercises like push-ups and squats. Regular strength training helps increase muscle mass, boost metabolism, enhance bone density, and support overall health. It's suitable for people of all fitness levels, and routines can be tailored to specific goals or abilities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a strength training coach?

To thrive as a Strength Training Coach, you need a solid understanding of exercise physiology, biomechanics, and program design, often supported by a bachelor's degree in a related field and certifications like CSCS or NASM. Familiarity with fitness assessment tools, strength training equipment, and digital tracking platforms is typically required. Strong communication, motivational skills, and the ability to adapt to individual client needs help coaches build trust and encourage progress. These skills ensure safe, effective training programs and foster long-term client success and retention.

What are some typical challenges strength training professionals face when working with clients of varying fitness levels?

Strength Training professionals often work with clients who have diverse backgrounds, abilities, and goals. A common challenge is designing personalized programs that are safe, effective, and motivating for beginners while still providing enough progression for advanced clients. Adapting exercises for those with injuries, limited mobility, or unique needs requires creativity and a strong understanding of anatomy. Additionally, professionals must communicate clearly, set realistic expectations, and foster a supportive environment to keep clients engaged and progressing.

What is the difference between Strength Training vs Personal Trainer?

Work EnvironmentGyms, fitness centers, personal gymsGyms, clients' homes, fitness facilities

Strength Training refers to the physical activity aimed at increasing muscle strength, often performed independently or in group settings. A Personal Trainer, on the other hand, is a professional who guides clients through strength training routines, ensuring proper technique and personalized programs. While strength training is a component of a personal trainer's services, the trainer's role encompasses motivation, education, and program design to help clients achieve their fitness goals effectively.

How to become a strength training professional?

To become a strength training professional, individuals typically obtain certification from recognized organizations such as the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) or the American Council on Exercise (ACE). Gaining practical experience through internships or working with clients, developing knowledge of anatomy and exercise techniques, and maintaining current certifications are essential steps in this career path.

Job description

Personal Trainer/Adaptive Coach

Adaptive Fitness, Parkinsonโ€™s, Older Adults & Special Populations

Quinnโ€™s Gym โ€“ Carmichael, CA
$27.50โ€“$30.00/hour
Part-Time

Quinnโ€™s Gym is looking for Exercise Science and Kinesiology professionals who want to use their education to make a meaningful difference in peopleโ€™s lives.

We are a private strength-training and adaptive-fitness facility in Carmichael serving older adults, people with Parkinsonโ€™s disease, neurodivergent children and adults, and traditional personal-training clients.

We are currently expanding our coaching team and have opportunities in two areas.

Morning / Early Afternoon Coaching

This position focuses primarily on:

  • One-on-one personal training
  • Older adults
  • People with Parkinsonโ€™s disease
  • Strength and functional fitness
  • Rock Steady Boxing participants

Previous boxing coaching or boxing-fitness experience is helpful, but it is not required. We can teach the right candidate our approach.

Afternoon / Evening RISE Adaptive Fitness

This position focuses primarily on our RISE adaptive fitness program for neurodivergent children, teens, and adults.

For this role, we are particularly interested in someone who genuinely enjoys working with children.

The ideal candidate is patient, energetic, creative, adaptable, and comfortable working with children who may learn, communicate, behave, or respond differently.

RISE coaches use strength training, movement, balance, coordination, games, challenges, and play to help participants become stronger, more confident, and more physically capable.

Qualifications

We are looking for candidates with a bachelorโ€™s degree in:

  • Exercise Science
  • Exercise Physiology
  • Kinesiology
  • Or a closely related field

Recent graduates are encouraged to apply.

Candidates should have:

  • A good understanding of exercise physiology, biomechanics, and strength training
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Patience and the ability to work with people of differing abilities
  • Reliability and professionalism
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • A willingness to learn our training methods and special-population programs

Experience in any of the following is particularly helpful:

  • Neurodivergent or autistic children
  • Youth fitness or youth sports
  • Adaptive physical activity
  • Older adults
  • Parkinsonโ€™s disease or other neurological conditions
  • Strength training
  • Personal training
  • Boxing or boxing fitness
  • Special education, recreation, or related programs

You do not need experience in every one of these areas. We are willing to train an exceptional candidate with the appropriate educational background, temperament, and desire to learn.

Why Quinnโ€™s Gym?

Many of the people we serve would not be well served in a traditional commercial gym.

Our coaches learn how to adapt exercise to the person in front of themโ€”whether that person is a child with autism, an older adult who wants to remain independent, or someone working to maintain function while living with Parkinsonโ€™s disease.

This is an opportunity to apply what you learned in Exercise Science or Kinesiology in a very practical setting while developing experience working with populations that require thoughtful and individualized coaching.

Compensation: $27.50โ€“$30.00/hour, depending on experience and qualifications.

Location: Quinnโ€™s Gym, Carmichael, California

Schedule: Part-time. Opportunities are available primarily during:

  • Mornings / early afternoons
  • Afternoons / evenings

Please indicate which schedule and population interests you most:

A. Parkinsonโ€™s / Older Adults / Personal Training

B. RISE / Neurodivergent Children & Adults

C. Both

Please submit your rรฉsumรฉ and a brief introduction describing your educational background, any relevant coaching or special-population experience, and why this work interests you.
