As of Aug 22, 2026, the average yearly pay for stratosphere in the United States is $105,026.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $83,000.00 and $128,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is a stratosphere job?

Stratosphere jobs typically refer to careers and roles related to the study, exploration, and utilization of the stratosphere, which is the second major layer of Earth's atmosphere. These jobs can include atmospheric scientists, meteorologists, aerospace engineers, and professionals involved in high-altitude balloon research, climate monitoring, and aviation. People in these roles often study weather patterns, ozone depletion, or develop technologies for aircraft and satellites that operate in or through the stratosphere. Such positions may be found in government agencies, research institutions, or private aerospace companies.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a stratosphere engineer?

To excel as a Stratosphere Engineer, you need a strong background in aerospace engineering, atmospheric science, and physics, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with simulation software, remote sensing systems, and data analysis tools is crucial for designing and monitoring high-altitude projects. Excellent problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills set top professionals apart when collaborating on complex missions. These skills ensure the safe, efficient, and innovative development of technologies operating in the stratosphere.

What are common challenges faced by aerospace engineers working on stratospheric projects, and how can they be addressed?

Aerospace engineers working on stratospheric projects often encounter challenges such as extreme temperature fluctuations, low atmospheric pressure, and the need for lightweight yet durable materials. Developing systems that can withstand these harsh conditions requires meticulous testing and innovative design. Additionally, coordinating with multidisciplinary teams—such as meteorologists, avionics specialists, and project managers—is crucial for mission success. Staying up-to-date with the latest advances in materials science and simulation software can help address these challenges and ensure project goals are met.

What is the difference between Stratosphere vs Data Analyst?

AspectStratosphereData Analyst
Required CredentialsBachelor's degree in science, engineering, or related fields; experience with data analysis toolsBachelor's degree in statistics, mathematics, or related fields; proficiency in data analysis software
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, aerospace companies, or scientific organizationsCorporate offices, consulting firms, or research institutions
Industry UsagePrimarily in aerospace, scientific research, and space explorationAcross finance, healthcare, marketing, and technology sectors

While both roles involve working with data, a Stratosphere specialist focuses on scientific and aerospace data related to space and atmospheric research, whereas a Data Analyst works across various industries analyzing business data to inform decisions. The roles share similar educational backgrounds and technical skills but differ in their application and industry focus.

Job description

Love catching defects before they fly?

Urban Sky is a fast-growing aerospace startup designing, building, operating, and selling stratospheric balloon systems. Our platforms support real-time wildfire monitoring, urban mapping, and missions for the Department of War (DoW), NASA, and other partners. We launch to the stratosphere weekly.

Join our Denver-based Safety, Quality & Mission Assurance team and be the quality voice on the production floor—guarding reliability, enabling on-time delivery, and codifying best practices across soft goods and hard goods.

Is this you?
  • You’re fluent in drawings, specs, and inspection criteria—and you enjoy translating them into unambiguous work instructions.
  • You’re equally comfortable inspecting soft goods and machined/electromechanical assemblies.
  • You think in systems: traceability, calibration control, and document revision management are second nature.
  • You collaborate with production to prevent defects at the source.
What you’ll do
  • Perform incoming, in-process, and final inspections to drawings, work instructions, and acceptance criteria.
  • Identify, tag, segregate, and disposition nonconforming material; issue Quality Alerts; support root cause and corrective actions.
  • Author and maintain inspection procedures and quality work instructions; manage controlled documents and revisions.
  • Maintain calibration logs and coordinate internal/third‑party calibrations; verify measurement system integrity.
  • Ensure part/serial/lot traceability and Certificates of Conformance are complete and correct.
  • Execute R&D, verification, and validation test suites; support refurbishment and rework.
  • Participate in PFMEA and Control Plan reviews; contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Support internal audits and upkeep of our AS9100 and ISO 9001 certified QMS.
  • Verify supplier documentation and support incoming inspections.
Must-haves
  • 2–3 years in aerospace, defense, or high-reliability manufacturing as a quality/test technician, inspector, or QA professional.
  • Working knowledge of AS9100, ISO 9001, or comparable QMS standards.
  • Experience testing/inspecting mechanical, electrical, and electromechanical systems; soft goods and hard goods exposure.
  • Proficiency with precision gauges; ability to run tests per written requirements.
  • Nonconformance documentation and disposition experience; strong technical writing and verbal communication.
  • Comfort on a busy production floor; Microsoft 365 proficiency; ERP/MRP familiarity a plus.
  • High school diploma required; technical degree or relevant vocational training preferred.
Nice-to-haves
  • Direct AS9100 or ISO 9001 QMS experience.
  • 8D, 5‑Why, A3, or Ishikawa problem-solving.
  • Lean, Six Sigma, or 5S.
  • Data analysis/SPC/process capability (Minitab, Excel, etc.).
Where you’ll work
  • On-site in Denver, CO with occasional extended hours (evenings/weekends) during peak demand.

We’re a small, supportive team of engineers, makers, developers, and doers who value candor, inclusion, respect, and empowerment—building the next chapter of stratospheric history in Denver and Texas.

Benefits
  • Medical, Vision and Dental
  • 15 days PTO plus company holidays
  • Cell Phone Bill Stipend
Skills & toolset
  • GD&T
  • Quality Inspection Experience
  • Data Analysis and Manipulation
