Story Intern information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Story Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Story Intern, you need a strong foundation in creative writing, storytelling techniques, and an understanding of narrative structure, often supported by coursework in film, animation, or literature. Familiarity with scriptwriting software (like Final Draft or Celtx), storyboarding tools, and basic editing platforms is typically required. Strong collaboration, communication, and attention to detail are valuable soft skills for contributing ideas and working within creative teams. These skills ensure you can effectively support the story development process, communicate ideas clearly, and adapt to the fast-paced, iterative environment of media production.

What are some common responsibilities and learning experiences for a Story Intern in a creative studio?

As a Story Intern in a creative studio, you are often involved in supporting the development of storyboards, brainstorming narrative ideas, and assisting writers or directors with script revisions. You'll collaborate closely with senior story artists and other departments such as animation and editorial, gaining firsthand insight into the storytelling pipeline. This role is an excellent opportunity to build your visual storytelling skills, receive feedback from industry professionals, and contribute to early-stage creative decisions, all of which are valuable for career growth in animation or film.

What is a Story Intern?

A Story Intern is an entry-level position, often within film, animation, television, or publishing companies, where the intern assists with the development and organization of stories and scripts. Responsibilities may include conducting research, providing feedback on story ideas, assisting with script revisions, and supporting the story team in various creative tasks. This role provides valuable hands-on experience and exposure to the storytelling process, making it ideal for students or recent graduates interested in creative writing, screenwriting, or story development careers.

What is the difference between Story Intern vs Content Writer?

AspectStory InternContent Writer
Required CredentialsTypically pursuing or recent graduate, some internships may require related courseworkOften requires a degree in English, Journalism, or related field
Work EnvironmentInternship setting, often in media, entertainment, or publishing companiesFull-time or freelance roles in digital media, marketing, or publishing
Employer & Industry UsageUsed by media companies, production houses, and entertainment firmsCommon across marketing agencies, online platforms, and publishing houses

The main difference is that a Story Intern is typically an entry-level internship focused on assisting with storytelling projects, gaining experience, and learning industry skills. A Content Writer, on the other hand, is a more established role involving creating and editing written content regularly. While both roles involve storytelling, the intern position is more about learning and supporting, whereas the content writer is responsible for producing finished content.

Job description

Digital Content Intern

We are looking for a Digital Content Intern to create videos and take high quality images that can be used on (but not limited to) social media platforms, our website, and advertisements. This role requires a creative mind who’s not afraid to play around with a camera and try out different editing styles.

This is a great role for a student wanting to grow their marketing/advertising knowledge and test their creative skills.

What You’ll Do

You will be responsible for creating and scheduling high-quality digital content and managing social media accounts. This includes writing copy, filming, co-directing, and editing informational videos on products as well as designing basic graphics/infographics, creating social media posts and scheduling them, and collaborating with others in the marketing team to support brand image.

You will be working with a hybrid marketing team, customers, and others within the company to capture content. You also work directly with another intern onsite to review each other’s work and brainstorm projects.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with others to meet marketing and advertising goals; this includes creating and adhering to a multi-media schedule as well as assisting in marketing strategies.
  • Film marketing and informational videos, provide directions during filming, and edit footage. You will also write copy.
  • Take ownership in your projects and identify opportunities for improvement; create mockups and be able to clearly describe your vision.
  • Routinely check social media accounts.
  • Create and upload digital billboards.
  • Analyze engagement metrics.
  • Researching trends and competitor content.
  • Communicate effectively; this job will require you to film a wide range of subjects such as trailer manufacturing, farming, and office employees.

Required Qualifications

  • Experience handling filming and photography equipment.
  • Experience with video editing software.
  • Strong communication skills with both the marketing team and individuals being filmed/photographed.
  • Ability to adhere to (or expand on) a multi-media schedule and voice opinions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 1 year of experience.
  • Prior marketing, advertising, content creation, videography, web management, or project ownership experience.
  • Experience using Adobe Creative Suite or Apple Creator Studio.
  • Experience reading and analyzing engagement metrics for social media accounts with proof of successful social media campaigns.
  • Experience using Squarespace or a similar website building and hosting platform.
  • Comfortable working in an environment with evolving requirements.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is a videographer who loves to tell stories through a lens but wants to break into the marketing and advertising world. A love for getting creative but also understanding the very technical details required to create quality content on a timeline.
