What is a stone setter?

Stone setters are skilled craftspeople who specialize in securely placing gemstones or other precious stones into jewelry pieces, such as rings, necklaces, or bracelets. Their work involves using precision tools and techniques to ensure stones are held firmly in place while enhancing the overall design and appearance of the jewelry. Stone setters often work closely with jewelers and designers to achieve the desired look and durability. Attention to detail and steady hands are essential qualities for this profession.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a stone setter, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Stone Setter, you need excellent hand-eye coordination, attention to detail, and experience with jewelry making or gemology, often supported by vocational training or apprenticeships. Familiarity with specialized tools such as prong pushers, bezel rollers, microscopes, and possibly CAD software is essential for precise stone placement. Patience, steady hands, and problem-solving skills help Stone Setters stand out in producing high-quality, durable settings. These competencies are vital to ensure the security and aesthetic quality of finished jewelry pieces, meeting both client and industry standards.

What are some common challenges faced by stone setters, and how can they be addressed on the job?

Stone Setters often encounter challenges such as working with delicate gemstones that can easily chip or crack, ensuring precise alignment and secure placement within jewelry settings. Managing these challenges requires steady hands, attention to detail, and the ability to use specialized tools skillfully. Collaboration with jewelers and designers is also crucial to understand the intended design and to troubleshoot any issues that arise during the setting process. Continuous practice and staying updated with new techniques can help Stone Setters maintain high-quality results and minimize errors.

Compensation & Details:
  • Pay: $25–$30/hour, based on experience.
  • Top performers: We're open to a higher, competitive rate for highly experienced setters based on bench test results.

  • Location: On-site in Boynton Beach, FL.

What You'll Be Doing:
  • Setting diamonds and gemstones — prong, pavé, channel, and more — with precision and consistency.
  • Stone tightening, repairs, and ring sizing.
  • Polishing and finishing to production standards.
  • Working with gold, platinum, and other precious metals.
  • Keeping quality control tight so every piece leaving the bench is clean and secure.

What We're Looking For:
  • Strong, hands-on diamond/gem setting experience (not entry-level).
  • Comfortable and confident working under a microscope with tight tolerances.
  • A steady hand and a detail-first mindset.
  • Ability to balance quality with production timelines.
  • Reliable, professional, and a good fit for a team bench environment.

Why Brilliance.com?
  • Steady work and consistent production volume.
  • 35+ years in business — an established, trusted name.
  • Work alongside experienced jewelers in a clean, organized shop.
  • 3,000+ five-star reviews back our reputation.
