Responsibilities may include loading and unloading shipments, maintaining inventory, and ensuring proper care of animals or goods. Workers in this role often use equipment such as forklifts, trucks, or manual tools to move items efficiently. Attention to safety and adherence to regulations are essential for maintaining a smooth operation.
Stockyard workers are primarily responsible for receiving, sorting, and moving livestock or materials within the yard, ensuring animals are cared for and safely housed. Daily tasks also include cleaning enclosures, maintaining equipment, monitoring animal health, and keeping accurate inventory records. The role often involves collaboration with truck drivers, auction staff, veterinarians, and fellow yard workers to coordinate shipments and livestock care. These varied responsibilities require flexibility and teamwork, making each day different and engaging for those working in a stockyard environment.
To thrive as a Stockyard worker, you need strong physical stamina, basic animal handling abilities, and an understanding of safety protocols, often supported by a high school diploma or equivalent experience. Familiarity with equipment such as forklifts, livestock chutes, and inventory management systems is preferred, and some positions may require certifications in equipment operation or animal welfare.
