Job description
Under general supervision of the Clinical Manager and guided by the policiesand procedures of UCSF Medical Center, Ambulatory Services and the Department of Ophthalmology, the Jr. Ophthalmic Photographer is responsible for the efficient organization and operation of all technical functions of the eye photography practice. The assignments may vary from day to day, and require the individual to be flexible and well-trained. The primary responsibilities of the Jr. Photographer are ophthalmic photography, scans and testing, and precise documentation of the patient's visit and patient care. The incumbent performs complex, intricate, and technically challenging photography, including Retinal Angiography and ophthalmic testing as ordered by Providers of the Department. Incumbent will also be required to assist in the capacity of a clinical technician as per needed with duties including patient care work-up and preliminary testing in preparation for the Provider's examination of the patient.

- Coordinates between multiple photographic sites within the Ophthalmology department
- Trains Ophthalmic Photography to other Technicians, Medical Students and Provides as needed
- Troubleshoots electronic and mechanical equipment within the Department of Ophthalmology

- As part of his/her daily activities, employee may access, transport and stock medications. These activities are in compliance with the Medications and Auxiliary Staff Competency, level 3.
- Participates in the consideration of purchasing new instruments working with Medical Director and clinical diagnostic services manager.
- COMMUNICATION AND COORDINATION

- Interacts in a collaborative way with Provider(s) and staff of assigned clinic, other clinics, and other ancillary service and administrative departments.

- Uses judgment to exercise delegated authority to work with others in a proactive way to troubleshoot operational and programmatic problems.
- Exhibits the ability to motivate others in educational development and higher levels of work performance.
- Encourages open communication and verbalization of opinions in an attempt to identify and resolve problems; strives to reduce tension and anxiety among staff members.
- Demonstrates good verbal and written communication skills, documents and reports clearly and concisely. Conveys instructions, directions, and information appropriately.
- Answers questions and conveys information regarding testing being performed to patients in a concise, sensitive, informative, and professional manner, keeping a positive and courteous tone.
- Consistently projects a professional and courteous demeanor to all internal and external clientele, Providers, co-workers and patients.
- Demonstrates courtesy, common sense and follow-through in all telephone communications, maintaining the Telephone Standards as established by the Medical Center.
- Complies with Medical Center and department policies and procedures for infection control, safety, administrative, and clinical practice. Complies with activities mandated by TJC, Title 22 and HIPPA. Takes an active part in preparation for regulatory reviews.
- OTHER FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Performs the basic, intermediate, and advanced procedures as needed requiring level appropriate knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the eye within the scope of practice of an ophthalmic technician.
- Administers and legibly documents the administration of ophthalmic medication drops while maintaining current knowledge of pharmacology and competency in ophthalmic drop medication administration.
- Cleans and maintains department instrumentation as needed.
- Understands and maintains calibration of all diagnostic instrumentation used.
- Performs and documents patient work-up, patient history, and all pre- and post-examination testing ordered by the Provider(s) within the scope of practice of an ophthalmic technician.
- Required to work as a team with the other Technicians/Ophthalmic Assistants/Nurses assigned to the same service in order to affect the efficient, timely completion of the clinic(s) to which he/she is assigned each day.
- Responsible for quality communication with all coworkers including Providers, Fellows, Residents, Technicians, and clerical/administrative staff that work in his/her assigned service.
- Has a supportive role in familiarizing new employees, including Fellows, Residents, Medical students to the clinical functions, policies and procedures of UCSF Medical Center and the Department of Ophthalmology.
- Is required to comply with the Medical Center House Standards.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- Certified Ophthalmology Assistant (COA®) or above
- Minimum 3 years' experience in clinical ophthalmology/optometry
- AHA CPR/BLS (including patient assessment and vital signs)
- Advanced knowledge of ocular anatomy, physiology and terminology
- Understanding of how anatomic systems and systemic disorders may affect the visual system
- Demonstrated experience in patient instruction/education
- Demonstrated ability in caring for and directing the blind or partially sighted patient
- Demonstrated experience in ophthalmic instrumentation cleaning and maintenance
- Demonstrated experience in minor surgical assisting and surgical set-up
- Possesses the ability to work with intermittent standing and sitting for 8-9 hours/day
- Good communication and organization skills, professionalism and motivation
- Under the direction of the Manager, actively works toward TJC compliance
- Demonstrated experience in responding to a patient emergency while in the clinic
Preferred Qualifications:
- OCT-C
- Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution
- Experience with a high-volume ophthalmic practice, Retinal or University Ophthalmic practice
