What is stock loan trading?

Stock loan trading, also known as securities lending, involves the temporary transfer of shares from a lender to a borrower, typically to facilitate short selling or to cover settlement failures. The borrower provides collateral, often cash or other securities, and pays a fee to the lender for the duration of the loan. This activity is a crucial part of the financial markets, as it enhances liquidity and enables various trading strategies. Stock loan traders manage these transactions, assess counterparty risk, and ensure compliance with regulations.

What are some typical challenges faced by professionals in stock loan trading, and how can they be managed?

Professionals in stock loan trading often navigate volatility in supply and demand for securities, regulatory constraints, and the pressure to manage counterparty risk. Adapting quickly to market news and maintaining strong relationships with both internal teams and external clients are key to overcoming these challenges. Effective communication, attention to detail, and a proactive approach to compliance help traders succeed in this fast-paced environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a stock loan trader, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Stock Loan Trader, you need strong analytical skills, in-depth knowledge of equity markets, and a background in finance or economics, often supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with trading platforms, securities lending systems, and regulatory compliance tools is typically required. Excellent communication, negotiation abilities, and the capacity to make quick decisions under pressure are standout soft skills in this role. These competencies are crucial for optimizing returns, managing risk, and maintaining strong client and counterparty relationships in a dynamic trading environment.

We started from scratch by building a completely cloud-native clearing and custody system designed for today's complex, global market. Our platform is fully integrated with central clearing houses and exchanges to support billions in trading volume per day. We've agonized about our data model abstractions, created horizontal scalability, and crafted thoughtful APIs. All so we can provide a best-in-class experience for our clients.
By combining highly-skilled product and engineering talent with seasoned finance professionals, we're building the essentials to compete in today's fast-paced markets.

Experience in securities lending and stock loan operations - including loan booking, rate negotiation support, and settlement of equity and fixed income borrows and loans - is essential.
Responsibilities:
The responsibilities of this role are as follows:
  • Manage end-to-end stock loan lifecycle: trade capture and confirmation, daily mark-to-market, rate resets, and contractual settlement
  • Own the return and recall, buy-in process, including monitoring open loans, processing early returns, and managing recall timelines in line with settlement cut-offs
  • Oversee corporate action processing across the securities finance book, including dividend entitlements, manufactured payments, and rights/spin-off events
  • Input into CCP/Exchange margin requirements
  • Oversee all operational KPIs, reconciliations, and margin calls
  • Perform and supervise daily position and cash reconciliations between internal systems, prime brokers, custodians, and tri-party agents (e.g. BNY, Euroclear, DTCC) and CCP's (OCC, NSCC - SFT)
  • Align closely with the Settlement team to manage fails risk to the firm
  • Monitor and actively manage securities lending fails, including buy-in exposure, partial settlement, and borrower/lender close-out procedures
  • Provide exceptional client and business stakeholder communication and service, acting as a key contact for Equity Finance operations
  • Support the onboarding process, ensuring adherence to industry standards and best practice
  • Liaise with the Revenue Finance team to ensure accurate accruals, fee capture, and rebate/fee reconciliations

Skills Required
  • At least two (2) years of professional experience working in an Securities Lending operations function

  • Familiarity with securities lending platforms and systems (e.g. Loanet, Equilend, 4sight/FIS, Broadridge SecFinance, or equivalent)
  • Solid experience in managing bilateral secured financing operations
  • Strong understanding of the MSLAs, GMSLAs and key contractual mechanics: right of substitution, manufactured payments, close-out netting, and event of default provisions
