What is a stock associate?

Stock associates are retail workers responsible for receiving, organizing, and maintaining inventory in stores or warehouses. They unload deliveries, stock shelves, and ensure products are displayed correctly and efficiently. Stock associates also help with inventory counts, track stock levels, and may assist customers in locating products. Their work ensures that store shelves remain well-stocked, clean, and organized, contributing to a positive shopping experience.

How does a stock associate typically interact with other departments in a retail environment?

As a Stock Associate, you’ll regularly collaborate with sales floor staff, managers, and sometimes receiving teams to ensure merchandise is available and well-organized. Communication is key when coordinating restocks, handling inventory discrepancies, or assisting with store displays. Building strong working relationships with these teams helps streamline operations and creates a more efficient workflow, making your contributions critical to the store’s overall success.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a stock associate, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Stock Associate, you need strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and basic math abilities, usually supported by a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with inventory management systems, handheld barcode scanners, and point-of-sale (POS) software is often required. Dependability, teamwork, and effective communication help Stock Associates excel in fast-paced retail environments. These skills ensure accurate inventory control, efficient restocking, and smooth store operations.

Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens is hiring Inventory Team Members!

Are you detail oriented, highly organized, excited about inspiring meaningful connections among people and nature in one of the most beautiful settings in Maine, and committed to supporting the Gardens’ Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility goals?

The Inventory Team helps us to articulate messages from our horticultural, educational, and plant science initiatives by keeping our vehicle for those messages-our products-moving through the shop. They are responsible for helping with the efficient and accurate receipt, ticketing, and disposition of merchandise; they assist with stocking the shop floor; and they keep the loading dock and backstock spaces clean and organized. This effort results in a retail experience that enriches a guest’s visit while generating meaningful financial support for the Gardens and our community.

This is a Seasonal, Part-time position with a schedule of 24-32 hours a week.

$17.00-17.50 hourly, non-exempt

Scheduled hours will generally be between 9:00 am and 5:00 pm and include at least one weekend day. Additional time may be needed outside these hours, especially during our Gardens Aglow winter light show, which requires additional flexibility.

Seasonal employees receive personal and sick paid time off, paid holidays, discounts in our culinary programs and Gardenshop, and a Gardens membership.

Primary Functions:

  • Assist with the accurate receipt of goods and the ticketing of incoming product.
  • Keep backstock areas organized and clean to facilitate quick and easy restocking of the sales floor; communicate important changes in stock levels or locations to shop team.
  • Help maintain the shop to the Gardens’ high standards, visually and environmentally; provide excellent guest experience while also keeping the floor properly stocked and working to prevent loss.
  • Remain informed of ongoing changes to the merchandise assortment, including categories, vendors, retail and cost pricing, and rate of turn.
  • Support the team on the sales floor operationally as needed, including covering breaks.

Physical Requirements:

This is an active job on a large campus requiring up to eight hours of standing, walking, kneeling, squatting, bending, and reaching up. Some lifting and carrying up to 40 pounds and the use of stools, dollies, and jacks to move stock is needed. This job requires standard visual acuity and the ability to operate a POS system and a PC with or without accommodation.

Requirements:
  • Some work history, life experience, and/or coursework related to the management of inventory or product; guest service and retail experience a bonus.
  • An organized mindset, the ability to appreciate complexity, and patience for fine details are all good character traits for this work.
  • Adaptability and excellent communication skills; we work in a fast-paced environment, but this position is also good for someone who can work alone.
