The Role and Why It's Important

As the Overnight Stock Manager at Hy-Vee, you'll lead the overnight crew that keeps our store stocked, organized, and ready for a great day. From managing orders and supervising truck unloads to training your team and troubleshooting equipment, your leadership behind the scenes directly impacts the experience our customers have every morning they walk through our doors.

What You'll Do

No two shifts are exactly the same, but here's what you can expect:

  • Set and uphold department standards for customer service, cleanliness, sanitation, team relations, and overall profitability

  • Supervise and direct the overnight stock crew, assistant managers, departments, and custodian crews, assigning duties and holding individual check-ins

  • Oversee ordering from the warehouse including pre-orders for grocery, non-foods, and supplies, and coordinate work with assistant managers

  • Coordinate the C.A.R.S. system including inventory setup, understock and backstock management, trigger settings, damage removal, and order review

  • Unload trucks, break down pallets, sort items by aisle, and check in vendor deliveries piece by piece

  • Supervise drop shipments, direct store deliveries, and oversee produce and frozen food truck unloading

  • Write the overnight stock schedule and monitor time-off requests, vacation requests, overtime hours, and sick call-ins

  • Train new employees on stocking, facing, order tags, UPCs, checkout, sacking, and customer service; train supervisors on register handling and department services

  • Monitor crew productivity and conduct individual reviews with team members

  • Assist with customer service including checkout, sacking, carry-outs, cash accountability, and day-end reports

  • Set and reset new items, tags, and prices as needed, including in-store specials for prior ad items

  • Understand and troubleshoot store equipment including electrical systems, registers, coolers, compressors, and display cases

  • Maintain compliance with Hy-Vee's dress code, hygiene standards, and all company policies

  • Assist in other store areas and take on special projects as needed

  • You'll receive direction and support from: Store Director, Store Manager, and Assistant Managers of Health Wellness Home, Perishables, Store Operations, and E-commerce

Your Skills

To be successful in this role, you'll need to be able to:

  • Lead and motivate a team in a fast-paced overnight retail environment

  • Solve practical problems and make sound decisions with a variety of variables

  • Use basic math skills, including fractions, decimals, and percentages

  • Communicate clearly in writing and verbally with employees, vendors, and leadership

  • Stay organized, manage multiple priorities, and work independently through a full overnight shift

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; three to five years of similar or related work experience preferred

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent required

  • Three to five years of similar or related work experience preferred

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to frequently lift, carry, push, or pull objects weighing 100 pounds or more, with or without mechanical assistance

  • Continuously stand and walk on hard surfaces for extended periods

  • Where applicable to the role: ability to operate pallet jacks, forklifts, or similar material-handling equipment (required operator certification must be completed prior to independent use)

  • Work in cooler or freezer environments for extended periods

  • Where applicable to the role: ability to safely use sharp knives and blades to cut, trim, or grind product

  • Where applicable to the role, and in accordance with applicable age and legal requirements: operate a cardboard baler or compactor

  • Where applicable to the role: perform repetitive motions associated with dough mixing, scaling, and proofing

  • Ability to unload, lift, stock, and rotate incoming truck freight and merchandise

Working Environment

This is a physically active role performed primarily during overnight hours throughout the store. You may encounter occasional exposure to noise, vibrations, equipment movement hazards, and cleaning chemicals or solvents, with frequent exposure to dirt. The role involves working with and around heavy store equipment including forklifts, power jacks, and compactors. Safety is always a priority, and training is provided to help ensure a safe and supportive work environment.

The anticipated hourly starting wage for this position is $18.00 to $22.50 depending on experience.
