Job Summary

24-hour responsibility for the Sterile Processing service which includes decontamination, packaging, sterilization and return of reprocessed supplies and instruments to Prisma Health departments to support quality patient care. Responsible for personnel management and cost-effective utilization of resources.

Essential Functions

  • All team members are expected to be knowledgeable and compliant with Prisma Health's purpose: Inspire health. Serve with compassion. Be the difference

  • Coordinates the work activities for Sterile Processing and ensures quality outcomes of service provided.

  • Participates in development of the annual budget for the department including needs for capital and personnel resources. Monitors actual expenditures to determine variance with budget and recommend/implement changes to operate within the budget.

  • Performs a variety of human resource management activities to include interviewing, hiring, evaluating, counseling; coaching; performance planning; competency assessment and terminating of assigned staff.

  • Participates in formulation and implementation of unit/service and multidisciplinary PI activities. Collaborates in plans for enhancement of services.

  • Establishes, implements, monitors and evaluates unit goals and outcomes in alignment with the Service Unit and Prisma Health Mission, values and strategic plans.

  • Coordinates department functions with other hospital units/services and community resources.

  • Prepares, implements and evaluates unit goals and objectives. Develops, implements, monitors, and evaluates personal performance objectives on an annual basis.

  • Maintains established Prisma Health policies, department specific policies, regulatory standards, safety and infection control standards. Interprets policies and procedures for staff. Maintains an awareness of Prisma Health actions, activities, projects and policy changes and communication to staff. Creates a climate to maintain and facilitate open lines of communication for the promotion of effective working relationships.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervisory/Management Responsibilities

  • Job has direct and/or indirect supervision of employees that may include final budget authority, hire/termination/disciplinary authority, performance appraisal responsibility. Job will be considered a member of the management staff with direct reports.

Minimum Requirements

  • Education - Completion of formal CSPD (Sterile Processing) program. Bachelor's degree in related field of study preferred.

  • Experience - Five (5) years CSPD (Sterile Processing) or Surgical Tech experience

In Lieu Of

  • In lieu of related coursework only, will accept BS in related field and 3 years related experience OR High School diploma (or GED) and 5 years related experience.

Required Certifications, Registrations, Licenses

  • Certification as either: CRCST (Certified Registered Central Service Technician) from HSPA (Healthcare Sterile Processing Association); OR CSPDT (Certified Sterile Processing & Distribution Technician) from CBSPD (Certification Board for Sterile Processing & Distribution)

  • Certified Healthcare Leader (CHL) from Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA) or Certified Sterile Processing Manager (CSPM) from Certification Board for Sterile Processing (CBSPD) preferred.

  • Applicants without CHL or CSPM certification will be required to obtain certification within one (1) year of hire.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Must demonstrate effective communication skills with customers and coworkers and actively support the mission, vision and values of Prisma Health.

Other Position Requirements

  • Current incumbents in this position as of 9/1/2025 are required to obtain CHL or CSPM certification by 9/1/2026.
