Job description

River Hospital is seeking a per diem Sterile Processing Technician to join our Ambulatory Surgical Unit Team.
Job purpose
The Sterile Processing Technician is responsible for maintaining high standards for decontamination, assembly, inspecting, wrapping and sterilization of surgical instruments and medical equipment 9endoscopes) for Surgical Services and all Ancillary Departments in the facility. This includes working in conjunction with the OR staff to provide timely sterile products, trays and case carts where applicable. The Sterile Processing Technician maintains consistency and continuous workflow between the OR and Sterile Processing while practicing above average customer service. Attends to specific daily needs of the patients as delegated by the Charge Nurse. Responsible for clerical duties under the supervision of the Charge Nurse.
Qualifications
  • Completion of a Sterile Processing Technician program or Surgical Tech/OR program, required
  • Certified Registered Central Service Technician Credential (CRCST), (2) Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician Credential (CSPDT) or (3) Certified Surgical Technologist credential, required
  • 1 year of experience in Sterile Processing or Surgical Tech experience, highly preferred.

Sterile processing technicians or central supply technicians serve a vital role in the healthcare industry. Sterile processing technicians decontaminate, inspect, package and sterilize equipment and devices used in the healthcare environment. These items range from complex devices to simple handheld surgical instruments.
A person cannot function as a sterile processing technician or central supply technician (CST) in a healthcare facility and a healthcare facility cannot employ or otherwise contract for the services of a CST unless the person:
  • has successfully passed a nationally accredited central service exam and holds and maintains the following credential administered by a nationally accredited central service technician credentialing organization (e.g., certified registered central service technician)
  • is a student or intern performing the functions of a sterile processing technician or CST if the student or intern is under the direct supervision of an appropriately licensed or certified healthcare professional and is functioning within the scope of the student's or intern's training
  • works in accordance with Public Health Law (Rules, Requirements, and Use of Central Service Technicians)

It is the employee's responsibility to know the requirements for certification, limited permit and licensure for their individual profession. It is also the responsibility of the employee to notify the employer of the status of any certification or licensure issue or potential issue. The employee will comply with all of the requirements outlined by the New York State Office of professions for the particular profession.
Working conditions and Physical requirements
Regular weekday shifts. OSHA Category A - potential for exposure to blood and other infectious body substances. Bending, lifting, standing, walking, must possess the physical ability to perform CPR.
