Job description

Decontamination
•    Identifies and uses appropriate methods and solutions to decontaminate instruments and clinical equipment.
•    Able to sort, disassemble, decontaminate, rinse and disinfect instruments and clinical equipment.
•    Understands and adheres to proper PPE attire.


Preparing Instruments    
•    Consistently uses count sheets to correctly assemble instrumentation. 
•    Properly protect, wrap/containerize and or peel package and label instruments
•    Identifies and inspects for cleanliness and functionality of instrumentation.


Storage/Distribution
•    Properly handles and stores sterile supplies, equipment and instruments.
•    Accesses Doctor preference cards.
•    Retrieves, disburses and tracks medical and surgical supplies and equipment to the customer in a quality and timely manner.


Sterilization Process
•    Selects appropriate sterilization methods.
•    Understands and adheres to the correct practices of sterilization.  
•    Properly documents and verifies sterilization loads and biological tests to determine the efficiency of the sterilization process.


Equipment
•    Operates and understands the equipment specific to SPD: steam, ETO, Sterrad and Steris I sterilizers, cart washers, washer/disinfectors, ultrasonic cleaners and heat sealers as well as a different array of testing devices.


Inventory Control  
•    Understands and implements the processes involved in ordering, receiving, stocking and monitoring usage of surgical supplies.  
•    Communicates supply issues to appropriate personnel in a timely manner.


General
•    Serves as a resource to customers on all SPD functions. 
•    In conjunction with management tracks his/her progress in regards to training, staff meetings and in-service education.
•    Performs duties as a SPD Aide independently, works proficiently without direct supervision.
•    Demonstrates the ability to stand “on call’
•    Maintains a clean and orderly work area.
•    Helps precept new employees (Grades 10, 11a, 12a)
•    Consistently provides service excellence to all patients, family members, visitors, volunteers and co-workers.
•    Perform other work-related duties as requested or assigned. 

Qualifications Grade 8, Sterile Processing Aide
•    Ability to read, write and communicate in English
•    High School Education or GED.
•    Basic Computer skills.
•    Good interpersonal skills, being concise by phone, intercom and in person.
•    Successful completion of Medical Terminology course OR successful passage of CCH Medical Terminology challenge exam.
•    Must have 1 of the following:
o    Successful completion of Anatomy & Physiology course (High School level or higher)
o    Successful passage of CCH Anatomy Exam
o    SPD Technician Certification
o    3 years recent (within the past 5 years) SPD experience 
•    Must take the SPD Technician Certification exam within 12 months of hire.
•    Must successfully pass the SPD Technician Certification exam within eighteen (18) months of hire and must maintain certification.

Qualifications Grade 10, Sterile Processing Technician I
Must qualify as a Grade 8 - Sterile Processing Aide.  In addition,
•    1 year experience as a SPD aide
•    SPD Technician Certification

Qualifications Grade 11a, Sterile Processing Technician II
Must qualify as a Grade 10 - Sterile Processing Technician I. In addition,
•    1 Year experience as a SPD Technician
•    Surgical Instrument Processor Certification

Qualifications Grade 12a, Sterile Processing Technician III
Must qualify as a Grade 11a - Sterile Processing Technician II.  In addition,
•    Surgical Instrument Processor Certification and/or Ambulatory Surgery Technician Certification
