A Brief Overview
Supervises and has 24-hour accountability for Sterile Processing in order to accomplish organizational and departmental strategic goals and objectives. Supervises and operates the Sterile Processing area and all of its related systems in an efficient, effective manner. This includes decontamination, inspection, cleaning, assembly, and packaging of all reusable linens, instruments, and medical/surgical equipment for Children's Hospital. Is responsible for the orientation, training, and education of all the Sterile Processing personnel, to ensure that they meet the core competencies of their position. Working under the supervision of the Manager Distribution Services, the Supervisor monitors compliance with department policies and procedures, collaborates with other departments, and utilizes the Materials Management Inventory System to track inventory items and issues for the Operation Room, Anesthesia, Procedure Room and OR Sterile Core
Essential Functions

Monitors compliance with policies and procedures, AAMI guidelines, infection control policies, and other regulatory agencies, (JCAHO).ย 

  • Directs the preparation of sterile supplies, instruments and equipment. Coordinates the routine activities of the Sterile Processing staff, plans and schedules work for the group.ย 
  • Responsible for tracking sterile processing data, performance improvement documentation, and administrative records.ย 
  • Maintains an adequate level of instruments in circulation, reordering replacements when necessary, and schedule and control all instrumentation repairs in a cost effective and efficient manner.ย 
  • Serves as the administrator of the SPM instrument tracking system, is expert in all facets of its operation, maintains and updates the data base as necessary, produces monthly reports and documentation as requested by Distribution Manager and Director of Materials Management.ย 
  • Coordinates and ensures CEU's are available for staff to maintain current certification status.ย 
  • Mentors and provides guidance to staff for continued development and expectations of the department.

Coordinates and supervises department functions to ensure service quality and continuity of care.ย 

Personnel Managementย 

  • Prioritizes and coordinates daily work activities. Provides leadership and guidance by sharing expertise with others. Approves schedules and monitors time worked.ย 
  • Trains and/or oversees the training of employees on job related tasks.ย 
  • Conducts employee performance management duties including completion and delivery of performance evaluations, setting goals, dissemination of information, coaching, addressing performance issues/routine correction actions, and recommending termination of employment.ย 
  • Submits notifications for personnel actions (e.g., status changes, terminations).ย 
  • May participate in selection, hiring, and salary recommendations. ย 

Operational/Financial Managementย 

  • Ensures cost effective use of resources by identifying and implementing changes related to staff allocation and assignment, and patient/department supplies.ย 
  • Ensures compliance with quality assurance, safety practices, policies and record keeping standards.ย 
  • May assist with the development and maintenance of policies and procedures.ย 
  • May participate in the implementation of business plans for the area.ย 
  • May assist with annual budget by tracking expenses and providing input for future budget needs.


Education Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D requiredย 
  • Associate's Degree from an accredited college or university in science, or related field preferred

Experience Qualifications

  • Minimum 3 years of healthcare Sterile Processing or Surgical Technologist experience requiredย 
  • Minimum 1 year's supervisory experience preferred, preferably in a healthcare setting preferred

Skills and Abilities

  • Interpersonal skills necessary to educate, motivate, and coordinate employee performance.

Licenses and Certifications

  • CST - Certified Surgical Technologist Required or
  • Certification as a Sterile Processing Technician Required and
  • Employees that have Surgical Technologist certification must obtain the Sterile Processing Technician certification within 1 Year Required
