Description
Purpose of Job
This position is responsible for performing routine activities in the decontamination, reprocessing/sterilization of supplies, instrument trays, and equipment necessary for patient care. This position is responsible for stocking of supplies, ordering of supplies, and inventory assessment, OR room set-up, turnover, cleaning and handling of surgical devices, supplies and preparation of room by obtaining equipment and case carts for the perioperative services. Assists with direct and indirect patient care which includes patient transportation.
Job Functions
  1. Provides specialized experience and direct responsibility for providing clean and sterile medical/surgical supplies and equipment for use in all patient care areas in-house and for all off-site clinics.
  2. Utilizes appropriate techniques in preparation, packaging, and sterilization functions maintaining a basic knowledge of microbiological principles for SPD practice.
  3. Works to supply surgical services with supplies and equipment.
  4. Obtaining and assembles instruments, equipment, positioning devices, and supplies for procedures as indicated on physician's preference cards.
  5. Performs testing and documentation of sterilization function with appropriate graphs and indicators.
  6. Maintains an adequate supply of patient related equipment, renting as needed to meet the demand.
  7. Maintains an adequate supply of linen needed for daily usage in Surgical Services.
  8. Assists and performs turnover in the OR suites between cases.
  9. Assists in transportation of pre and postoperative patients.
  10. Assists in staff and patient cares as directed.
  11. Utilized effective communications skills in interpersonal relationships with co-workers and other members of the healthcare team.
  12. Participates in unit-based Quality Improvement process.
  13. Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education/Work Experience
  • High school graduate or equivalent

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to meet and maintain the necessary background checks as aligned with position functions
  • Ability to communicate in the English language for effective written and verbal correspondence in order to complete job functions as mentioned above
  • Ability to coordinate instrument processing with daily surgical schedule
  • Ability to multitask
  • Ability to respond appropriately to unpredictable situations and diverse patient populations
  • Ability to understand verbal and written instructions in the English language and respond accordingly in order to complete job functions as mentioned above

License/Certifications
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross within 30 days from hire. Current Employees BLS certification within one year from 10/2025

Preferred Qualifications
  • SPD basic equipment experience with knowledge of sterilization methods and procedures, instrumentation, and aseptic technique
  • Emergency Medical Technician or previous Nursing Assistant experience
  • SPD certification
