To thrive as a STEM Intern, you typically need a solid academic background in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics, often pursuing or holding a relevant degree. Familiarity with technical tools such as programming languages, data analysis software, laboratory equipment, or engineering design platforms is commonly expected. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and eagerness to learn are standout soft skills in this position. These skills and qualities are crucial for contributing to projects, adapting to new challenges, and maximizing learning opportunities during the internship.

What is the difference between Stem Internship vs STEM Technician?

AspectStem InternshipSTEM Technician

Work EnvironmentEducational settings, labs, or industry internships; learning-focusedLaboratories, manufacturing, or technical facilities; hands-on technical work
Employer & Industry UsageEducational institutions, companies offering internship programsResearch labs, manufacturing firms, technical service providers

While both roles involve STEM skills, a Stem Internship is primarily an educational opportunity for students to gain experience, whereas a STEM Technician is a more technical, hands-on role requiring specific training or certifications. Internships often serve as a stepping stone into the STEM industry, while technicians perform essential technical tasks in various industries.

What types of projects or tasks can I expect to work on during a STEM internship?

During a STEM internship, you can expect to work on a variety of hands-on projects that align with your field of study, such as assisting with research experiments, developing software prototypes, analyzing data, or supporting engineering design processes. Interns often collaborate closely with experienced professionals and may participate in team meetings, contribute to ongoing projects, and present their findings. This experience not only builds technical skills but also helps interns understand workplace dynamics and professional expectations within STEM industries.

What is a STEM internship?

STEM internships are short-term work experiences in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. They provide students or recent graduates with practical, hands-on experience related to their academic studies. These internships help participants develop technical skills, gain industry insights, and build professional networks, often increasing their chances of securing a full-time job in a STEM field after graduation.

Job description

SpaceX was founded under the belief that a future where humanity is out exploring the stars is fundamentally more exciting than one where we are not. Today SpaceX is actively developing the technologies to make this possible, with the ultimate goal of enabling human life on Mars.
FULL STACK SOFTWARE ENGINEER, CONSTELLATION TOOLS (STARLINK)
Starlink is the world's largest satellite constellation and is providing fast, reliable internet to millions of users worldwide. As a member of the Constellation Tools team at SpaceX, you'll build the user interfaces and backend to enable safe and efficient operations for all Starlink satellites and ground assets. Your products are the operational tools operations, engineering, and reliability teams rely on. In this role you'll curate smooth user experiences with thoughtful designs while limiting software complexity. Your contributions will directly impact operational safety for satellites and the ability to scale the network.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Develop well-architected, highly reliable, responsive, and performant web applications to command, control, and monitor fleets of assets
  • Create aesthetic and easy-to-use user interfaces that reduce the operational load of operators and maintain high guardrails for safety
  • Create and apply techniques, tools, and infrastructure that decrease software complexity and maintenance over time
  • Maintain high software standards and software engineering best practices across the full stack
  • Regularly sit with Operators to obtain firsthand feedback of how the team's products are used and what improvements can be made
  • Demonstrate a strong attitude to learn and adapt quickly, diving deep into new technologies as needed to become an expert in frontend and backend technologies alike (while prior expertise in key areas is a plus)

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelors degree in STEM & 1+ year of industry and/or internship experience; OR 3+ years of professional software development experience in lieu of a STEM degree.

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Frontend experience in Angular, React, or a similar JavaScript framework
  • Programming experience in Python, C#, .NET, Go, Scala, Java, or similar object-oriented language
  • Experience with PostgreSQL, CockroachDB, or similar relational database technologies
  • Production experience with infrastructure tools such as Docker and Kubernetes
  • Experience with version control, continuous integration, and continuous delivery systems
  • Expertise in profiling and improving application performance
  • Experience with build systems (Make, Bazel/Pants/Buck, Gradle) and package management tools (pip, npm)
  • Strong attention to detail
  • A drive to deliver exceptional operations tools and willingness to own all outcomes

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Ability to work extended hours or weekends as needed for mission critical deadlines
  • Ability to work on an "on-call" basis on a weeklong rotational schedule

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:
Pay range:
Full Stack Software Engineer/Level I: $125,000.00 - $145,000.00/per year
Full Stack Software Engineer/Level II: $145,000.00 - $175,000.00/per year
Your actual level and base salary will be determined on a case-by-case basis and may vary based on the following considerations: job-related knowledge and skills, education, and experience.
Base salary is just one part of your total rewards package at SpaceX. You may also be eligible for long-term incentives, in the form of company stock, stock options, or long-term cash awards, as well as potential discretionary bonuses and the ability to purchase additional stock at a discount through an Employee Stock Purchase Plan. You will also receive access to comprehensive medical, vision, and dental coverage, access to a 401(k) retirement plan, short and long-term disability insurance, life insurance, paid parental leave, and various other discounts and perks. You may also accrue 3 weeks of paid vacation and will be eligible for 10 or more paid holidays per year. Employees in Washington State accrue paid sick time in compliance with state and federal law. Company shuttles are offered to employees for roundtrip travel from select Seattle locations to the SpaceX Redmond office Monday to Friday.
