Job description

Theย Makerspace Program Managerย is responsible for the strategic and operational leadership of STEAM-oriented programs throughout Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale.ย Designs, implements, and oversees a comprehensive program that inspires Club members to be creative thinkers and learners through making, engineering, design, and integration of art. Supports Club staff efforts to integrate instructional strategies and multiple technologies that promote cooperative and project-based learning through an interdisciplinary and STEAM curriculum.ย 

ย 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONSย 

Essential functions and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:ย 

Leadership:ย 

  • Supports andย mirrors theย culture, mission, values,ย and coreย beliefs ofย Boys & Girls Clubs ofย Greaterย Scottsdale.ย 

  • Ensuresย aย healthy andย safeย environmentย withย high-qualityย STEAMย Makerspaceย programs and servicesย thatย preparesย youth forย success.ย 

  • Plans and coordinates all STEAM related educational activities, including the purchaseย and planned use of tools and resources.ย 

  • Plansย andย designsย learning activities toย promote Club program staff development in STEAM related fields.ย 

  • Provides guidance and coachingย to Club program staff on educational and instructional methodology related to the implementation of project-based curriculum.ย 

  • Organizes a Club-wide STEAM science fair.ย 

  • Creates a dynamic, positive work environment for staff members. Maintains close daily contact with direct and indirect reports. Provides coaching, training opportunities, redirection, and encouragement; helps develop skill set necessary for internal promotion.ย ย ย 

  • Implements and ensures adherence to BGCSโ€™s policies and procedures.ย ย 

  • Provides soundย judgement and decision-making. Acts quicklyย inย emergency situations.ย 

  • Promotes an inclusive, welcoming, and respectful environment that embraces diversity.ย 

Curriculumย &ย Program Support:ย 

  • Identifies and utilizes best practices for conducting STEAM education.ย 

  • Identifies and applies educational and technology-related research and instructional design principles in guiding use of technology in education.ย 

  • Works to integrate art-thinking and makingย routines into the engineering and design process.ย 

  • Identifies specific age-appropriate objectives and collaborates with K-12 teachers to increase STEAM, design, innovation, and makerspace opportunities among the student community.ย 

  • Designs, develops, assesses, and manages STEAM learning experiences.ย Developsย criteria to demonstrate student impact and learning success.ย 

Makerspaceย Lab Managementย &ย Supervision:ย 

  • Maintains machines, tools, materials, safe use, and schedule ofย the Makerspaces.ย 

  • Researchesย andย recommendsย theย purchaseย of appropriate STEAM tools and resources for classroom use.ย Ensuresย Club staff are appropriately trained.ย 

  • Troubleshoots minor issues orย malfunctions of hardware orย softwareย and works with hardware consultants to identify and troubleshoot major issues in the Makerspace labs.ย 

  • Works with Branch leadership to ensure Makerspaces remain safe, clean, and organized.ย 

  • Promotes an inclusive, welcoming, and respectful environment that embraces diversity.ย 

  • Modelsย positive guidanceย andย discipline techniques to redirect member behavior issues.ย 

  • Promotes and demonstrates active supervision techniques when working with Club members.ย ย 

Community Outreach:ย 

  • Facilitates connections with other makerspace communities and external organizationsย to promote program participation and provide collaborative opportunities.ย 

  • Works with Club staff toย create and disseminate information to various stakeholdersย about student projects and progress.ย 

  • Collaboratesย with community organizations,ย colleges,ย and universitiesย to provideย and/or expand co-curricularย programming which supports student success.ย 

Additional Responsibilities:ย 

  • Other duties as assigned.ย 

Required:ย 

  • Bachelorโ€™s degree or equivalent work experience in a related field.ย ย 

  • Minimumย 5 yearsโ€™ teaching experience in the sciences, engineering technology, and/or the arts with a strong personalย interest and exposure to all 3 disciplines.ย 

  • Knowledgeย ofย and experience with current best practices in STEAM education.ย 

  • Strong classroom management skills.ย 

  • Experience coaching staff teachers and/orย leading professional development programs.ย 

  • Knowledge of online educational websites, resources, platforms, and apps pertinent to the teaching of science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics.ย 

  • Knowledge of content standards, effective instructional strategies, and assessment-driven instruction.ย 

  • Experience writing and designing curriculum.ย 

  • Must be proficient in the use of Microsoft Suite and be comfortable adapting to new technology.ย 

  • Strongย Google Apps for Education skills.ย 

  • Experience or familiarity with toolsย or conceptsย such asย 3D printing, AutoCAD, Arduino, Makey-Makey,ย Codecademy, Tynker, Scratch,ย BeeBot, Legoย MindStorms, laser-engraving, and roboticsย 

  • Effectiveย written, verbal, and technology-based communication skills.ย 

  • Leadership ability in the use,ย adaptation,ย and introduction of aย wide arrayย of technology toย support and deepen student learning and instruction.ย 

  • Flawless ethics and integrity.ย 

  • Safety oriented mindset.ย 

Recommended:ย 

  • Masterโ€™s or doctoralย degreeย from an accredited college or university.ย 

  • Direct youth programming experience.ย 

  • Experience working in a non-profit setting.ย

WORKING CONDITIONSย 

  • Work environment is social: divided between typical officeย settingย and roaming field work.ย 

  • Must be ableย to complete work satisfactorily despite significant, frequent distractionsย throughout the workday.ย 

  • Workloadย and working hours may fluctuate throughout the year.ย 

  • Split shifts and longer than 8-hour days may be necessary.ย 

  • Occasional outdoor programming/activities may be required.ย 

  • Frequent deadlines for deliverables and program reporting.ย 

  • May be required to drive Club vehicles, including a 15-passenger minibus.ย 

  • Occasionalย Saturday or late in theย eveningย programming or events may occur whereย attendance or assistance are required.ย
