Distinguishing Features of the Class On an assigned shift, an incumbent is responsible for the operation and maintenance of a high or low pressure steam plant, central and remote heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems, compressed air supply, multiple hearth incinerators, and auxiliary equipment. Incumbents perform work, routine in nature, requiring a knowledge of the principles of operating steam boilers, combustion and various ancillary equipment
A Second Class Stationary Engineer is assigned to a shift and works under direct supervision from a stationary engineer or designated personnel. Various tasks are assigned individually but routine performance of them is usually not subject to immediate review. Work is checked by periodic inspections and repair jobs are carefully inspected on completion.
Examples of work (Illustration Only) Operates and maintains high or low pressure boilers and related boiler room equipment such as stokers, pumps, fans and coal and ash handling machinery; Assists in the operation and maintenance of multiple hearth incinerators and related equipment such as condensate return systems, deareators, feed water preheators; Repairs and checks operating adjustments necessary to maintain multiple hearth incinerators; Repairs and checks operating adjustments necessary to maintain the heating plant in good and safe operating condition; Maintains records of operation; May make minor electrical and plumbing repairs; May assist boilermakers on major repair work; May supervise the work of one or more steam heating equipment workers; Performs related work as required. Minimum Qualifications PROMOTIONAL: Continuous and permanent status as a Junior Housing Project Engineer, Steam Heating Equipment Worker or Heating Equipment Service Worker in any city department for one year. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: 1.) Possession of a current Second Class Stationary Engineer's License issued in accordance with City Ordinances which must be presented at time of filling application
2.) Possession of a current New York State Driver's License which must be presented at time of appointment.
