What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a statistical engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Statistical Engineer, you need strong quantitative analysis skills, a background in statistics or mathematics, and often a relevant degree such as in engineering or applied statistics. Proficiency with statistical software (e.g., R, SAS, Python), data management systems, and sometimes Six Sigma certification is typically required. Critical thinking, problem-solving, and clear communication are crucial soft skills for interpreting data and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams. These skills ensure accurate data-driven decisions, efficient process improvements, and effective solutions to complex engineering challenges.

What is the difference between Statistical Engineering vs Data Scientist?

AspectStatistical EngineeringData Scientist
Required credentialsStatistics, Data Analysis, EngineeringStatistics, Computer Science, Data Analysis
Work environmentManufacturing, R&D, Engineering teamsBusiness, Tech, Research sectors
Employer usageOptimizing processes, designing experimentsBuilding models, insights, predictive analytics

Statistical Engineering focuses on applying statistical methods to improve engineering processes and product development, often within manufacturing or R&D settings. Data Scientists analyze large datasets to extract insights, build predictive models, and support business decisions. While both roles require strong statistical skills, Statistical Engineering emphasizes process optimization and experimental design, whereas Data Scientists focus on data-driven insights across diverse industries.

How does a statistical engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams to implement data-driven solutions?

Statistical Engineers frequently work alongside data scientists, software engineers, and business analysts to design and implement robust data-driven solutions. They are responsible for translating complex statistical models into actionable insights and ensuring that these models are integrated effectively within existing systems. Collaboration often involves regular meetings to align on project goals, sharing progress updates, and troubleshooting technical challenges together. This interdisciplinary teamwork is essential for ensuring that statistical methodologies are not only theoretically sound but also practically applicable to real-world business problems.

What is statistical engineering?

Statistical engineering is an interdisciplinary field that focuses on the integration and application of statistical methods and principles to solve complex, large-scale problems in science, business, and engineering. It involves designing data collection processes, analyzing and interpreting data, and implementing statistical solutions within larger systems. Statistical engineers often work on projects that require collaboration with other engineering disciplines, using statistics as a foundational tool to drive decision-making and innovation.

Job description

Heartflow is a medical technology company advancing the diagnosis and management of coronary artery disease, the #1 cause of death worldwide, using cutting-edge technology. The flagship product-an AI-driven, non-invasive cardiac test supported by the ACC/AHA Chest Pain Guidelines called the Heartflow FFRCT Analysis-provides a color-coded, 3D model of a patient's coronary arteries indicating the impact blockages have on blood flow to the heart. Heartflow is the first AI-driven non-invasive integrated heart care solution across the CCTA pathway that helps clinicians identify stenoses in the coronary arteries (RoadMap™Analysis), assess coronary blood flow (FFRCT Analysis), and characterize and quantify coronary atherosclerosis (Plaque Analysis). Our pipeline of products is growing and so is our team; join us in helping to revolutionize precision heartcare.
Heartflow is a publicly traded company (HTFL) that has received international recognition for exceptional strides in healthcare innovation, is supported by medical societies around the world, cleared for use in the US, UK, Europe, Japan and Canada, and has been used for more than 500,000 patients worldwide.
The Associate Clinical SAS Programmer/Junior Statistician plays a pivotal role in the clinical trial lifecycle by transforming raw clinical trial data into formatted, analysis-ready datasets and generating the outputs required for, conference, publication, and regulatory submissions. The Associate Clinical SAS Programmer/Junior Statistician will interact well with the Heartflow Clinical Research staff and collaborate effectively with principal investigators to ensure that data structure, quality and reporting strictly adhere to industry standards and regulatory guidelines. The Associate Clinical SAS Programmer/Junior Statistician will have demonstrated experience programming in SAS, exceptional organizational skills, excellent attention to detail, and will be comfortable working in a fast-paced start-up culture.
Job Responsibilities:
  • Dataset Development & Mapping: Develop, validate, and maintain SAS programs to create SDTM (Study Data Tabulation Model) and ADaM (Analysis Data Model) datasets from raw clinical databases.
    • Create and review dataset specifications based on the protocol, and case report forms (eCRFs).
    • Draft and implement Statistical Analysis Plan (SAP) and create mock-up shells for Tables, Listings, and Figures (TFLs) under senior guidance.
  • TFL Generation: Program, test, and validate Tables, Listings, and Figures (TFLs) required for Conferences, Publications, Clinical Study Reports (CSRs), Interim Analysis, Data Monitoring Committees (DMC), and safety monitoring.
    • Perform routine statistical analyses (such as descriptive statistics, t-tests, ANOVA, and basic regression modeling) using SAS.
  • Standards & Compliance: Ensure strict compliance with CDISC standards (SDTM/ADaM) and internal standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Validation & Quality Control: Perform independent double-programming to validate high-risk datasets and statistical outputs, ensuring 100% accuracy and reproducibility of clinical trial results.
  • Reporting and Interpretation: Assist in writing the statistical methods and results sections for Clinical Study Reports (CSRs), abstracts, and manuscripts. Prepare clear, concise summaries of statistical findings for internal project teams and clinical investigators.
  • Effectively translate complex statistical requests from principal investigators and biostatisticians into programmatic solutions.
  • Manage project deliverables to ensure they remain within the timeline and budget
  • Develop timelines for programming.
  • Participate in and lead process improvement activities within the department and cross functionally, including SOP development
  • Work with other clinical research team members on study start-up activities including the development and review of case report forms.
  • Manage multiple timelines, protocol amendments, and urgent data requests simultaneously.
  • Meticulous approach to data quality and validation code.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with principal investigators
  • Work in coordination with Data Management, statisticians, programmer/analysts, clinical research team members, and other team members as required
  • Perform other duties as required for successfully completing studies, as necessary

Skills Needed:

  • Proficiency in computer programs and specifically in Microsoft office tools including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint;
  • Ability to explain mathematical and statistical concepts to non-statistical team members (like clinicians and Clinical Trial Managers).
  • Strong analytical mindset with high attention to detail in data trends and anomalies.
  • SAS proficiency required: Advanced knowledge of Base SAS, SAS/STAT, SAS/GRAPH, SAS/Macro facility, and SQL.
  • CDISC Standards: Hands-on experience implementing SDTM and ADaM models.
