What is a state tax professional?

State tax professionals are experts who specialize in understanding, preparing, and managing taxes that are imposed at the state level, such as income, sales, property, and excise taxes. They help individuals, businesses, and organizations comply with state tax laws, file state tax returns, and minimize tax liabilities within legal boundaries. State tax professionals also advise on the implications of state tax changes, represent clients during audits, and stay updated with the latest tax regulations in specific states.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a state tax professional, and why are they important?

To thrive as a State Tax Professional, you need a solid understanding of state tax laws, compliance procedures, and accounting principles, often supported by a degree in accounting or finance and relevant certifications like CPA or CMI. Familiarity with tax preparation software, data analysis tools, and state-specific e-filing systems is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication are essential soft skills for interpreting complex regulations and advising clients or organizations. These skills are crucial for ensuring accurate tax filings, minimizing liabilities, and maintaining compliance with ever-changing state tax regulations.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in a state tax role, and how can they be managed?

Professionals in State Tax roles often encounter challenges such as navigating frequent changes in tax regulations, managing compliance across multiple jurisdictions, and ensuring accurate reporting under tight deadlines. Staying up-to-date with legislative updates and leveraging tax technology can help manage these complexities. Collaboration with internal finance, legal teams, and external advisors is also essential to address nuanced state-specific tax issues and minimize risk.

Job description

Tax Accounting Manager - Lead the Tax Strategy, Not Just the Returns

Elm Grove, WI | Hybrid

Compensation is competitive and commensurate with experience

Own the client relationships. Shape the tax strategy. Be the go-to expert.

You’re not looking for another grinder role. You want to steer the work, mentor the team, and be the trusted advisor your clients call first.

In this Tax Accounting Manager role, you’ll manage a book of business, lead engagements, and drive tax planning for closely held companies and high-value individuals across industries like healthcare, real estate, construction, manufacturing, the arts, and more.

You’ll work where tax technical meets client strategy—reviewing complex returns, guiding staff, and translating changing tax laws into clear, confident recommendations.

If you’ve put in your busy seasons and are ready to step fully into that manager/leader lane, we want to talk to you.

What You'll Work On

You’ll be the tax point-person for a diverse, closely held client base, with real ownership over relationships and deliverables:

  • Federal and multi-state individual income tax
  • Federal and multi-state business tax returns
  • Tax planning and projections for closely held businesses
  • Research around complex and evolving tax issues
  • Process improvement within the tax practice
  • Client relationship management and advisory
  • Staff coaching, review, and development
  • Industry trend and best-practice sharing within the firm

You’ll leverage tools like the Thomson Reuters suite along with Microsoft Teams, Excel, Word, and Outlook to keep the work sharp, accurate, and efficient.

This is where your hard-won tax experience turns into real strategic influence.

What You'll Be Doing
  • Preparing and reviewing complex business tax returns
  • Preparing and reviewing individual tax returns
  • Managing and growing a defined book of business
  • Leading tax planning and projection work requested by clients
  • Researching tax issues and communicating clear findings
  • Identifying and recommending process improvements in the tax function
  • Staying current on tax law changes through literature, seminars, and training
  • Consulting with clients to understand their financial affairs and tax exposure
  • Responding to client calls and emails in a timely, professional manner
  • Developing and maintaining relationships with clients, regulators, and industry organizations
  • Transferring industry knowledge, trends, and best practices to others in the firm
  • Overseeing, coaching, and developing staff involved in return preparation
What We're Looking For
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • CPA, EA, or JD required
  • At least 8 full busy seasons in tax preparing and reviewing individual and business returns
  • Ability to manage and develop newer staff members
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Clear, quality communication with staff and clients
  • Positive attitude, team-first mindset, and willingness to learn
  • General proficiency with Microsoft Teams, Excel, Word, and Outlook
  • Experience with Thomson Reuters suite preferred
  • Ability to learn from prior engagements and apply that knowledge forward
The Experience That Will Really Get Our Attention

You’ve lived through multiple busy seasons as the steady hand—reviewing, troubleshooting, and explaining complex issues without losing your cool. Clients trust you, staff lean on you, and you enjoy turning dense tax law into practical moves for closely held businesses and their owners.

If you’ve already been a go-to tax resource, can juggle a book of business, and naturally step into mentorship and process improvement, you’ll stand out here.

High-signal tools and focus areas: Thomson Reuters suite • Microsoft Excel • Microsoft Word • Microsoft Outlook • Microsoft Teams

Why This Opportunity?

You’re stepping into a firm that backs its managers with real flexibility—hybrid schedules, flex time options, and generous PTO at the manager level.

You’ll own meaningful client relationships and have room to shape how the work gets done, from planning and projections to process upgrades and staff development.

Sign-on bonuses and strong, experience-based compensation recognize the value of the busy seasons you’ve already put in.

Compensation is competitive and commensurate with experience.
