About The Public Defender of Indiana: The Public Defender of Indiana has an opening for a full-time (37.5 hours/week) paralegal. The office provides legal representation to indigent incarcerated men, women, and children in state court post-conviction proceedings.
Role overview: The Paralegals in this role play a vital part in supporting our clients' legal representation and ensuring the overall efficiency of the office. Each paralegal provides administrative and case-related support to a team of attorneys. Responsibilities include assisting with the preparation and filing of trial and appellate pleadings; ordering documents and records; maintaining and organizing client case files; calendaring hearings and filing deadlines; coordinating with court agencies and the Department of Correction; scheduling client conferences; and completing other tasks as assigned.
Salary Statement: The salary for this position traditionally starts at $44,187.00, but may be commensurate with education or work experience.

A Day in the Life:
The essential functions of this role are as follows:
  • Provides administrative support to a pool of attorneys.
  • Assisting with the preparation and filing of trial and appellate pleadings.
  • Ordering documents and other records.
  • Client case file maintenance and organization.
  • Calendaring hearings and pleading deadlines.
  • frequent interaction with court agencies and the Department of Correction.
  • Scheduling client conferences; and other tasks as needed.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including interaction with coworkers, outside agencies, and court staff
  • A proven record of dependability, initiative, and responsibility
  • Familiarity with legal proceedings and electronic court filing systems
  • Excellent analytical, critical-thinking, and problem-solving abilities
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail

  • Proficiency in computer applications, including Microsoft Word, Excel, case management systems, and legal databases
  • Ability to handle sensitive documents and information with confidentiality
  • Strong time-management skills and the ability to meet deadlines

  • Able to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.

A high school diploma or equivalent is required; a bachelor's degree or Paralegal Certificate is preferred.
