What is a state employee?

State employees are individuals who work for a state government in various departments, agencies, or institutions. Their roles can include administrative, professional, technical, and support positions in areas such as education, public safety, health services, and transportation. State employees are responsible for implementing state laws, policies, and programs to serve the public. They typically receive benefits such as health insurance, retirement plans, and paid leave. Employment requirements, benefits, and job responsibilities can vary depending on the specific state and position.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a state employee, and why are they important?

To thrive as a State Employee, you generally need a relevant educational background (often a bachelor’s degree), organizational skills, and knowledge of public sector policies and procedures. Familiarity with government software systems, databases, and sometimes specific certifications (such as civil service eligibility) is important. Strong communication, problem-solving, and teamwork skills help individuals excel in serving the public and collaborating with colleagues. These capabilities are essential for ensuring efficient, transparent, and effective delivery of government services.

What are some common challenges state employees face when working with the public and how can they effectively address them?

State Employees frequently interact with members of the public who may have urgent needs, complex questions, or concerns about government services. One common challenge is managing high volumes of inquiries while maintaining professionalism and empathy, especially in stressful situations. Effective communication, patience, and thorough knowledge of department procedures can help address these challenges. The VEC is also an integral part of a historic milestone as Virginia becomes the first state in the South to offer PFML. We offer paid leave; a minimum of 13 paid state holidays per year; medical, dental, vision, and life insurance options; retirement plans (including 401a Cash Match and 457 Deferred Compensation Plan for classified positions); and are a federally recognized Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) employer.
If you're motivated by public service, continuous improvement, and meaningful work that supports opportunity for all, the VEC is a place where your contributions matter!
