Job description

The Berlin Steel Construction Company is a full-service specialty contractor, primarily with structural steel and miscellaneous metals. We design, fabricate, and erect structures in the Northeast and in other parts of the country. We have 2 fabrication facilities, 4 erection operations facilities, and 6 office locations that provide engineering and management of projects. We are a 100% employee-owned company (ESOP) with a desire for growth. We service the private commercial, public, institutional, and industrial markets.
We are seeking a driven and detail-oriented Estimatorwith a minimum of 2 years of experience in the commercial construction to join our team in the Glen Burnie, MD office and support our operations in structural steel and miscellaneous metals. This role is responsible for performing accurate quantity takeoffs, developing thorough cost estimates, and preparing competitive bids while ensuring adherence to company processes and industry standards. As part of our Estimating team, you will contribute to process improvements that support standardization, efficiency, and profitability across the organization.
Key Responsibilities
  • Evaluate all bid instructions and documents, noting deviations from the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) Code of Standard Practice and any special requirements affecting cost or operations.
  • Examine bid forms, special conditions, specifications, general notes, and drawings-paying close attention to customized or non-standard components.
  • Visit proposed sites as necessary to assess logistics and identify potential challenges to be addressed in bid clarifications or qualifications.
  • Attend pre-bid and/or scope review meetings as required.
  • Solicit pricing and delivery commitments from preferred vendors for all products not produced in-house; obtain and review vendor/subcontractor quotes for clarifications and exclusions.
  • Prepare a complete takeoff of materials, applying labor hours and other costs to produce a full estimate and equipment plan.
  • Provide a comprehensive estimating recap in the company's standard format for review with the Estimating and/or Division Manager.
  • Assemble all required paperwork for the bid, including forms, unit pricing, bid bonds, and insurance calculations
  • Prepare bid proposals with all pertinent information, qualifications, clarifications, and exclusions.
  • Upon project award, follow company start-up procedures and ensure a thorough handoff to the assigned Project Manager.
  • Serve as a reference to the Project Manager throughout the duration of the project.
  • Communicate with clients and stakeholders to clarify scope items and resolve questions through RFIs.

Qualifications
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in the commercial construction.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Valid state driver's license in good standing.
  • Associate's degree in construction related field or accounting/finance with courses in engineering OR minimum of 5 years of experience in construction estimating.
  • Strong understanding of structural steel and/or miscellaneous metals fabrication and erection.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (e.g., Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Teams).
