Position Description
The Structural Steel Fitter is responsible for laying out, fitting, and assembling structural steel components according to blueprints, shop drawings, and specifications. This role ensures steel members are aligned, secured, and prepared for welding in compliance with quality, safety, and production standards in a steel fabrication environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Read and interpret blueprints, shop drawings, and specifications
  • Measure, lay out, and mark steel components using measuring tools and templates
  • Fit and align beams, columns, plates, and other structural steel members
  • Clamp, tack weld, bolt, or secure components in proper position for welding
  • Verify dimensions, angles, and tolerances before final welding
  • Operate hand tools, power tools, grinders, cutting torches, and measuring devices
  • Inspect fitted components for accuracy and quality
  • Identify fitting issues and communicate corrections to supervisors or welders
  • Follow all safety procedures, OSHA regulations, and PPE requirements
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area

Position Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED preferred
  • Prior experience as a steel fitter or in structural steel fabrication
  • Ability to read blueprints and welding symbols
