Summary
Balfour Beatty is seeking an Assistant Superintendent join our National Special Projects Group (SPG). This position will report to the Carolinas division but will be located in the Mid-Atlantic (Virginia, Maryland, and Washington D.C.). The ideal candidate will be a motivated, organized professional eager to grow their career in field leadership. This entry-level management role supports daily site operations, safety oversight, and quality control activities under the supervision of the Superintendent. Some travel may be expected beyond initial project closeout.
As an Assistant Superintendent, you'll help coordinate subcontractors, monitor progress, and ensure that work is performed safely, efficiently, and to the highest standards. You'll gain hands-on experience in all aspects of construction site management while contributing to Balfour Beatty's commitment to teamwork, operational excellence, and our Zero Harm® safety culture.
Essential Functions
  • Field Coordination: Assist in supervising and coordinating subcontractor work to maintain schedule, quality, and safety standards; manage designated work areas or tasks assigned by the Superintendent.
  • Safety Management: Lead weekly safety meetings, conduct inspections, and ensure OSHA 10/30 compliance across the jobsite; support development of project-specific safety and disaster response plans.
  • Planning & Scheduling: Participate in pull planning and CPM meetings; help track progress, sequence activities, and maintain look-ahead schedules for assigned areas.
  • Project Start-up: Support site mobilization efforts including fencing, signage, utilities, and staging; assist in developing traffic control and temporary utility plans.
  • Quality Assurance: Verify that work meets contract specifications; document inspections in BIM 360; coordinate testing, ensure correction of deficiencies, and oversee implementation of the project Quality Control plan.
  • Subcontractor Management: Conduct subcontractor orientations, review daily reports, and ensure site logistics and coordination support continuous work progress.
  • Closeout & Turnover: Assist in testing and acceptance of life safety systems, MEP commissioning, and owner move-in coordination; help manage project demobilization and documentation of as-builts and owner training.
  • Team Collaboration: Work closely with the Superintendent to maintain project momentum; provide field support and guidance to Project Engineers and assist in mentoring junior team members.

Minimum Requirements
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • 10+ years of field construction experience, preferably in interior upfits and renovations.
  • OSHA 10 certification.
  • Strong understanding of construction methods, scheduling, and quality control.
  • Excellent communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.

Preferred Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or related field.
  • OSHA 30 certification.
  • Experience managing subcontractors or small project scopes independently.
  • Familiarity with BIM 360 and other construction management software.
  • Proven ability to promote safety and foster teamwork on the jobsite.
