What does a stage designer do?

A stage designer, also known as a set designer, is responsible for creating the visual environment of a theater production, concert, or event. They design sets, props, and sometimes lighting to help bring the director’s vision to life and enhance the storytelling. Stage designers collaborate closely with directors, costume designers, and lighting designers to ensure all visual elements work together. Their work includes sketching ideas, building models, selecting materials, and overseeing the construction and installation of sets.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a stage designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Stage Designer, you need a solid background in set design, spatial awareness, visual arts, and often a degree in theater design or a related field. Familiarity with design software like AutoCAD, SketchUp, and Adobe Creative Suite, as well as knowledge of stagecraft and lighting systems, is typically required. Creativity, collaboration, problem-solving, and strong communication skills set outstanding stage designers apart. These skills ensure effective realization of artistic visions, smooth coordination with production teams, and the creation of impactful stage environments.

What are some common challenges stage designers face when working on live productions?

Stage Designers often encounter challenges such as balancing creative vision with budgetary or technical constraints, adapting designs to different venues, and collaborating with directors and other departments like lighting, sound, and costumes. Meeting tight deadlines and making real-time adjustments during rehearsals are also common aspects of the role. Strong communication and problem-solving skills are crucial to navigate these challenges and deliver visually compelling and practical stage environments.

Job description

We are seeking a highly skilled and passionate individual to join our team as an AI Design Facilitator and Forward-Deployed Engineer II - Consultant. This role involves teaching technical AI skills through a design lens, engaging in early-stage engineering work, and incubating innovative products from concept to code. The position will have both client-facing responsibilities and an internal enablement component.

Recruiting for this role ends on August 31, 2026

Work you'll do

In this role, you will be responsible for:

  • Shaping and lead early-stage product development and product incubation projects with a focus on rapid prototyping using cutting edge generative AI tools.
  • Supporting our teams by teaching them to use and implement the tools, frameworks and patterns needed for rapid prototyping with generative AI.
  • Teaching Technical AI Skills: Develop and deliver comprehensive training programs on generative AI technologies, including tools such as GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Replit, Airtable, and platforms like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Gemini. Tailor content to various skill levels and ensure practical, hands-on learning experiences for designers, engineers, and product managers.
  • Bringing a design-forward angle to the program: introducing user research, user testing, and design workshops into how participants approach their problems, so the work isn't only about shipping code but about building the right thing for a real user.
  • Helping shape the FDE approach: working with the team on where and how human-centered design principles fit into the FDE method, from how we frame a problem to how we validate a prototype.
  • Early-Stage Forward-Deployed Engineering: Collaborate with cross-functional teams to design and implement AI solutions for real-world problems. Engage in rapid prototyping and iterative development to validate concepts and refine solutions.
  • Product Incubation: Lead the incubation of new AI products, from ideation to deployment. Work closely with product managers, designers, and engineers to bring innovative ideas to life and ensure successful product launches.
  • Client-Facing and Internal Enablement: Serve as a key point of contact for clients, providing expert guidance and support on AI initiatives. Additionally, enable internal teams by sharing knowledge, best practices, and facilitating collaboration.

A successful candidate would possess these skills:

  • A real design background: user research, user testing, human-centered design, or a closely related discipline, applied to actual project work.
  • Comfort running workshops and facilitating groups, and translating technical material into exercises a mixed audience can follow.
  • Ability to work independently and collaborate as part of a team
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Meticulous attention to detail and quality of work product
  • Ability to build and sustain professional relationships
  • Ability to lead projects or workstreams
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and professional demeanor
  • Ability to meet deadlines
