What does a stage designer do?

A stage designer, also known as a set designer, is responsible for creating the visual environment of a theater production, concert, or event. They design sets, props, and sometimes lighting to help bring the director’s vision to life and enhance the storytelling. Stage designers collaborate closely with directors, costume designers, and lighting designers to ensure all visual elements work together. Their work includes sketching ideas, building models, selecting materials, and overseeing the construction and installation of sets.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a stage designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Stage Designer, you need a solid background in set design, spatial awareness, visual arts, and often a degree in theater design or a related field. Familiarity with design software like AutoCAD, SketchUp, and Adobe Creative Suite, as well as knowledge of stagecraft and lighting systems, is typically required. Creativity, collaboration, problem-solving, and strong communication skills set outstanding stage designers apart. These skills ensure effective realization of artistic visions, smooth coordination with production teams, and the creation of impactful stage environments.

What are some common challenges stage designers face when working on live productions?

Stage Designers often encounter challenges such as balancing creative vision with budgetary or technical constraints, adapting designs to different venues, and collaborating with directors and other departments like lighting, sound, and costumes. Meeting tight deadlines and making real-time adjustments during rehearsals are also common aspects of the role. Strong communication and problem-solving skills are crucial to navigate these challenges and deliver visually compelling and practical stage environments.

What is the difference between Stage Designer vs Set Designer?

The Set Designer, on the other hand, primarily designs the physical scenery and backgrounds for theater, film, or TV productions. Their roles often overlap, but their specific focus and work environments differ.

How do you become a stage designer?

To become a stage designer, individuals typically pursue a bachelor's degree in theater design, set design, or a related field. Gaining experience through internships, building a portfolio, and developing skills in drafting, painting, and computer-aided design (CAD) are essential steps in establishing a career in stage design.

Job description

VetraFi | Product Designer24d agoVetraFiProduct Designer**About VetraFi | Banking for Warfighters** VetraFi is a Veteran-led banking platform on a mission to shield the military community from predatory finance, help them earn more from every paycheck, and give them the tools to build long-term wealth. Founded by two Army Veterans and built by the military community, VetraFi exists to help the military community earn more. We believe no service member should be one flat tire or one government shutdown away from financial chaos. So we are building practical tools that help the military community exercise their Financial Fitness one paycheck at a time. Two products sit at the core of what we do today: a High-Yield Savings Account and the Shield Secured Card. The High-Yield Savings Account helps members put hard-earned paychecks to work, with no monthly fees and no hidden fees. The Shield Secured Card helps the military community build credit safely: it's backed by funds in the member's own deposit account, carries a credit limit based on the balance they maintain, and reports eligible account activity to the credit bureaus. More Financial Fitness tools are on the way, all aimed at helping the military community during and after their service. We are a seed-stage FinTech company building the premier financial tools and banking product for service members. With product launch targeted for summer of 2026, this is a pivotal moment to join our technical team and shape the future of military-focused banking. **The role** We're hiring a **Product Designer** to take ownership of the VetraFi experience end-to-end. You'll be the design voice across the company, partnering directly with the product, engineering, and growth team to turn rough ideas into polished, shipped products. This is a high-autonomy, "run with it" role. We're not looking for someone who needs day-to-day direction. We're looking for someone with strong product judgment who can take an ambiguous goal and drive it to a great outcome with limited process. It's an early-stage, build-the-system role: you'll help shape not just screens, but how design works here as we grow. **What you'll work on** * **Reimagine onboarding & KYC.** Today, signing up can feel like opening a bank account. Your job is to make it feel like joining a modern app: shortening and simplifying question flows, cutting form length, and removing friction while keeping us compliant.* **Raise the craft bar across the app.** Micro-interactions and micro-animations, polish, and the small details that make a product feel trustworthy and premium.* **Unify the experience.** We have a core product and 3–4 adjacent products on the way. You'll help merge them into one cohesive, coherent experience rather than a pile of separate features.* **Extend beyond the app.** Take the experience to web, to future product surfaces, and to emerging interfaces (e.g., AI assistants / connector-style cards) where they make sense.* **Shape new product areas**. As our roadmap grows, you'll help design new experiences across savings, credit, payments, and features built specifically for the military community. **What you'll do** * Own the full design process end-to-end: research, problem framing, wireframes, prototypes, and production-ready UI.* Apply systems thinking to keep a growing set of products feeling like one product.* Translate complex, regulated financial flows into experiences that feel simple and safe.* Partner closely with engineering through build and QA so what ships matches the intent.* Establish and iterate on design systems, patterns, and foundations that let quality scale.* Move with high craft *and* high speed, shipping real improvements continuously. **What you'll bring** * A true product designer, not just a visual/UI designer. You think in flows, systems, and outcomes, not just screens.* 4+ years shipping digital products, with a portfolio of modern, polished mobile and web work.* Demonstrated ability to own ambiguous, early-stage problems and turn them into shipped products with minimal hand-holding.* Experience in fintech or another regulated/complex domain, and comfortable designing for money, trust, and edge cases* Strong Figma, prototyping, and design-systems skills.* Low-ego, high-collaboration working style: you partner well with our engineering, marketing, operations and growth teams. **Nice to have** * Experience at a consumer fintech, neobank, payments, lending, or credit product (think the caliber of Chime, Cash App, Venmo).* Motion/interaction design chops and front-end literacy (HTML/CSS, or designing closely with React).* Experience in compliance-heavy flows (KYC/onboarding, identity, disclosures).* A bias for fast prototyping, including AI-assisted prototyping, to reach clarity quickly.* Affinity for our mission and the communities we serve. **Compensation & benefits** * Base Salary: $100,000–$160,000, depending on level and experience* Meaningful early-stage equity* Benefits: health / dental / vision, 401k, Unlimited PTO, Maternity/Paternity Leave* Remote within the US; candidates in or near Austin, TX preferred **How to apply** Send your resume and portfolio (required). Point us to one project where you took something from ambiguity all the way to shipped. We care most about how you think and what you actually got out the door. What VetraFi doesVetraFi is a digital banking platform built for the U.S. military community, including those who serve, those who’ve served, and the families who stand beside them.
