What is a staff web developer?

A Staff Web Developer is a senior-level professional responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining complex web applications and websites. They often lead technical teams, set coding standards, and mentor junior developers, ensuring that projects are delivered efficiently and to a high standard. In addition to hands-on coding, Staff Web Developers collaborate with stakeholders to define project requirements and architectural decisions. Their expertise helps organizations build scalable, secure, and user-friendly digital experiences.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a staff web developer?

To thrive as a Staff Web Developer, you need advanced proficiency in front-end and back-end programming languages (such as JavaScript, HTML/CSS, and server-side frameworks), along with a strong portfolio and relevant experience. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, cloud platforms, CI/CD pipelines, and often a bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field are typically required. Leadership, problem-solving, and effective communication are critical soft skills that distinguish top performers in this role. These skills and qualities are essential for delivering robust, scalable web solutions and mentoring teams in a rapidly evolving technical environment.

How does a staff web developer typically collaborate with product managers and designers during a project's lifecycle?

As a Staff Web Developer, you play a key role in cross-functional collaboration, especially with product managers and designers. Early in the project, you'll participate in planning meetings to provide technical insights, help shape user stories, and ensure feasibility of design concepts. Throughout development, you'll work closely with designers to implement UI/UX elements accurately and with product managers to clarify requirements and provide progress updates. This collaborative process helps deliver high-quality features aligned with business goals while fostering a shared sense of ownership across the team.

Job description

Job Title:
Web Developer – Magento E-Commerce Platform

Occupation Summary:
Web developers and programmers use a variety of programming languages to design, create, and modify websites. They analyze users' needs to implement content, graphics, performance, and website capacity, and may also integrate websites with other computer applications. In this role, these duties are applied specifically to the maintenance, development, and continuous improvement of a Magento-based e-commerce platform.

Company / Work Context:
This position supports a Web-to-Print e-commerce business operating on a Magento platform. The role involves hands-on backend development, systems integration, and DevOps/sysadmin responsibilities across production infrastructure, working closely with operations and content stakeholders to keep the storefront reliable, performant, and continuously improving.

Main Duties:
  • Develop, write, modify, integrate, and test code for the Magento website, including custom modules, themes, templates, and web application interfaces.
  • Conduct tests and analyze data to monitor site quality, security, and user interface/checkout experience, identifying areas for improvement across the storefront and admin panel.
  • Develop and implement procedures for ongoing website revisions, including catalog updates, promotional content, and template/email changes within Magento.
  • Monitor and maintain website functionality, including server infrastructure, file permissions, caching layers (e.g., Cloudflare), and third-party integrations.
  • Participate in website architecture and integration decisions in collaboration with infrastructure leads, operations staff, and business stakeholders.
  • Research and evaluate interactive tools, extensions, and automation solutions (e.g., shipping/review integrations) to extend the platform's capabilities.
  • Perform backend development, scripting, and systems integration work connecting the Magento platform to external services (e.g., shipping carriers, review platforms).
  • Provide DevOps/sysadmin support for production infrastructure, including SSH-level server access, deployment tasks, and troubleshooting of live site issues.

Employment Requirements:
  • A bachelor's degree in computer science, computer programming, web development, software engineering, or completion of a college program in computer science or a related field is usually required.
  • Experience as a computer programmer is usually required.
  • Hands-on experience with Magento (or a comparable e-commerce platform) is strongly preferred.
  • Familiarity with server administration, caching/CDN configuration, and third-party API integrations is an asset.
  • Working understanding of PHP (particularly the Symfony framework, which underlies Magento 2) is required.
  • Working understanding of Go (Golang) is required for building and maintaining backend automation services and integrations.
