Staff Power Electronics Engineer information

What does a staff power electronics engineer do?

A Staff Power Electronics Engineer designs, develops, and tests electronic systems and devices that manage and convert electrical power efficiently. They work on projects involving power supplies, motor drives, renewable energy systems, and high-voltage circuits. Their responsibilities often include leading technical teams, conducting simulations, troubleshooting complex issues, and ensuring compliance with industry standards. Staff-level engineers typically have significant experience and may mentor junior engineers or oversee project development.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a staff power electronics engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Staff Power Electronics Engineer, you need advanced knowledge of power electronics design, circuit analysis, and a bachelor's or master's degree in electrical engineering. Expertise with simulation tools like SPICE, PCB design software, and familiarity with industry standards or relevant certifications such as Professional Engineer (PE) are typically required. Strong problem-solving, leadership, and effective communication skills help drive project success and cross-functional collaboration. These capabilities ensure robust, innovative solutions and efficient product development in complex power electronics systems.

What are the most common challenges faced by a staff power electronics engineer, and how are they typically addressed within a team environment?

Staff Power Electronics Engineers often face challenges such as managing thermal constraints, ensuring electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), and meeting stringent efficiency or reliability targets in their designs. These challenges require close collaboration with cross-functional teams, including mechanical, firmware, and test engineers, to optimize system performance and resolve issues early in the development process. Regular design reviews, simulation tools, and iterative prototyping are commonly used strategies to address these challenges, helping ensure that both technical and regulatory requirements are met. Fostering open communication within the team is essential for troubleshooting complex problems and sharing best practices.

Electronics Engineer

About Pegasus

Pegasus is an aerospace and defense technology company developing advanced sensing and alerting systems that connect pilots and aircraft like never before. Our flagship technology, MIDAS, provides real-time flight safety insights to military and commercial operators, enabling safer operations in even the harshest conditions. Backed by major defense primes and government partners, Pegasus is entering a critical growth phase in 2027 - and we're expanding our engineering team to deliver the next generation of intelligent, connected flight safety systems.

Role Overview

We're looking for a temporary hands-on Electronics Engineer to design, develop, and validate embedded electronics for advanced aerospace sensing platforms.

You'll contribute to the full hardware lifecycle-from concept and schematic design through prototyping, testing, and production handoff-working closely with firmware, mechanical, and systems teams.

This role is ideal for an engineer with practical experience in circuit design and embedded hardware development who's able to quickly come up to speed and support our team for a fixed, four-to-six-month term.

You'll help build reliable, low-power electronics that enable flight safety in challenging and mission-critical applications.

This is a full-time position for a term of four months, and may be supported by the Mitacs Accelerate program in collaboration with the University of Alberta's Faculty of Engineering.

Key Responsibilities

Hardware Design & Development

  • Design and develop microcontroller-based embedded electronics for sensing and communication systems.
  • Implement low-power designs for battery-operated and wireless platforms (BLE, Li-Ion/NiMH, solar).
  • Lead the development of automated PCB testing and verification systems
  • Interface with PCB manufacturers to optimize large-scale manufacturing
  • Create schematics, perform PCB layout (in Altium Designer or KiCad), and support bring-up, integration and verification testing.
  • Participate in component selection, prototyping, and design optimization for performance, manufacturability, and reliability (DFM/DFT).

System Integration & Testing

  • Collaborate with firmware, mechanical, and systems teams on cross-functional integration and debugging.
  • Support lab and field testing for prototype systems.
  • Conduct testing, validation, and troubleshooting of electronic hardware and subsystems.

Quality & Compliance

  • Contribute to design documentation and revision control.
  • Support EMI/EMC, environmental, and reliability testing as needed.
  • Design to meet relevant aerospace and regulatory standards (CE, FCC, FAA).

Collaboration & Growth

  • Work within a fast-paced, collaborative engineering team.
  • Contribute ideas to improve product design, efficiency, and reliability.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Completed coursework in Electrical, Electronics, Computer, or Mechatronics Engineering
  • 1-5 years of experience in electronic hardware design, ideally for embedded or wireless systems.
  • Hands-on experience with:
    • BLE or similar low-power wireless protocols
    • Li-Ion battery systems and power management
    • Low-power microcontrollers (e.g., Nordic, STM32, TI-MSP430, ESP32, Silicon Labs)
  • Proficiency in PCB design tools (Altium Designer or KiCad).
  • Strong understanding of circuit design, debugging, and test equipment use.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and documentation skills.
  • Motivated, detail-oriented, and comfortable working in a multidisciplinary environment.

Nice to Have

  • Experience in aerospace, defense, or other highly regulated or safety-critical industries.
  • Familiarity with RF design, antenna tuning, or EMI/EMC best practices.
  • Demonstrated ability in manufacturing, test automation, or design for certification and Qualification processes.
  • Interest in ultra-low power design and IoT hardware optimization.

Why Join Us

Pegasus is defining the next era of intelligent flight. As an Electronics Engineer, you'll contribute to technologies that enhance global aviation safety and reliability. You'll work alongside talented engineers across software, systems, and data disciplines-building hardware that flies in some of the world's most advanced aircraft.

We offer:

  • Professional growth and mentorship opportunities
  • A mission-driven culture focused on technical excellence, impact, and integrity

Join a team engineering the future of connected flight.
