Staff Packaging information

What is a staff packaging?

Staff packaging jobs involve preparing, packing, and organizing products or materials for shipment or storage. Employees in these roles ensure that items are correctly packaged, labeled, and sometimes inspected for quality before they are sent out. Staff packaging workers may use various tools and machinery, follow safety procedures, and maintain accurate records. These jobs are common in warehouses, manufacturing plants, and distribution centers. Attention to detail and the ability to work efficiently are important skills for staff packaging positions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a staff packaging professional?

To thrive as a Staff Packaging professional, you need expertise in packaging design, materials science, and manufacturing processes, typically supported by a degree in packaging engineering or a related field. Familiarity with CAD software, packaging testing equipment, and regulatory compliance systems is often required. Strong project management, attention to detail, and effective communication are essential soft skills for collaborating with cross-functional teams and suppliers. These abilities ensure the development of functional, cost-effective, and compliant packaging solutions that meet product requirements and industry standards.

What are some of the common challenges faced in a staff packaging role and how can they be managed effectively?

One of the main challenges in a Staff Packaging role is maintaining accuracy and efficiency while working under tight deadlines, especially during peak production periods. Staff members must ensure that products are correctly labeled, securely packaged, and meet quality standards to avoid costly errors or product returns. Effective communication with team members and supervisors helps address potential issues quickly, while staying organized and following established procedures can minimize mistakes. Additionally, adapting to changes in packaging materials or technology is important for ongoing success in this role.

About this position

Staff Packaging Engineer
Location: Leesburg, VA (5-15% Travel Required)

Company: VB Spine

Looking for a career where your work truly matters? At VB Spine, youโ€™ll be part of a mission-focused team that supports surgeons during life-changing spinal procedures. Weโ€™re the largest privately held spine company and among the largest familyโ€‘owned medical technology companies in the world, dedicated to innovation, surgeon partnerships, and improving patient outcomes in spine care. As a Staff Packaging Engineer in our R&D function within the Spine division, youโ€™ll play a critical leadership role on the packaging teamโ€”designing, developing, and optimizing sterile and nonโ€‘sterile packaging solutions that ensure medical devices reach the operating room safely, compliantly, and costโ€‘effectively.

What Youโ€™ll Do:

  • Lead the development and management of packaging procedures, design rules, and guidelines that balance performance, cost, and reliability for both sterile and non-sterile medical device packaging
  • Create advanced packaging designs from concept through final release, including detailed CAD documentation (SolidWorks or Creo) for primary, secondary, and tertiary packaging
  • Develop and maintain component specifications for all packaging levels and lead the design, execution, and analysis of packaging testing protocols
  • Partner closely with product development engineering teams to define optimal packaging solutions while managing multiple projects to meet aggressive timelines
  • Design and validate cases and trays for transportation and terminal sterilization of non-sterile devices intended for hospital use
  • Identify viable primary packaging options, develop secondary shipment packaging, and support continuous improvement and cost-reduction initiatives
  • Write and contribute to risk management documentation (e.g., DFMEA, PFMEA) related to packaging in coordination with cross-functional project teams
  • Collaborate with suppliers and subcontractors to ensure designs are optimized, manufacturable, and seamlessly integrated with VB Spine operations
  • Conduct value analysis, cost reduction activities, and stay current with emerging trends in packaging technology and materials
  • Establish yourself as a thought leader in sterile and non-sterile medical device packaging while obtaining and maintaining relevant industry credentials

What You Bring:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Packaging Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Quality Engineering, or Microbiology required
  • 4+ years of hands-on experience in packaging design and development (medical device packaging strongly preferred)
  • 2+ years of experience creating packaging designs in CAD (SolidWorks or Creo preferred)
  • Strong working knowledge of Quality System Regulation (QSR) and medical device packaging standards
  • Strategic thinker with excellent technical communication, project management, and cross-functional collaboration skills
  • Highly detail-oriented, personally driven, and able to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 30 pounds and work effectively in an office/lab setting with frequent use of hands for design and testing activities

Why VB Spine?
We believe in growing talent from within. At VB Spine, join a high-performing team, benefit from peer and executive mentorship, and play a key role in developing innovative packaging solutions that protect life-changing spinal implants and instrumentsโ€”positioning yourself for growth and impact in a dynamic, mission-driven medical device company.
