Both roles require similar educational backgrounds and certifications, but the senior position involves greater leadership and project management responsibilities.

What is a Sr Reservoir Engineer?

Sr Reservoir Engineers are experienced professionals in the oil and gas industry who analyze and manage the production and recovery of hydrocarbons from underground reservoirs. They use advanced techniques and technologies to estimate reserves, optimize well performance, and design strategies for efficient resource extraction. Senior Reservoir Engineers also mentor junior staff, lead technical projects, and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to maximize field value while ensuring safety and environmental standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Sr Reservoir Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Sr Reservoir Engineer, you need deep expertise in reservoir engineering principles, advanced analytical skills, and a degree in petroleum engineering or a related field. Proficiency with reservoir simulation software (such as Eclipse or CMG), decline curve analysis tools, and familiarity with industry standards like SPE are typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, clear communication, and effective collaboration with multidisciplinary teams distinguish top performers. These skills ensure accurate reservoir management, optimized production, and successful project outcomes in a competitive energy sector.

What are some common challenges Sr Reservoir Engineers face when working on multidisciplinary teams?

Sr Reservoir Engineers often collaborate with geologists, production engineers, and data analysts to optimize reservoir performance and recovery. A major challenge can be aligning diverse technical perspectives and integrating differing data sources into cohesive reservoir models. Effective communication and a willingness to adapt solutions based on input from other disciplines are essential for success. Building strong relationships across departments helps ensure that reservoir development plans are both technically sound and operationally viable.

Job description

At Murphy Oil Corporation, we believe the rich experiences and backgrounds of our employees strengthen our Company, create a productive workforce, and drive our success. We encourage you to apply for the positions for which you meet the qualifications.
Job Summary
The Sr Reservoir Engineer should be a self-starter who is comfortable contributing in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary environment. The role requires demonstrated reservoir engineering experience supporting deepwater field development, infill drilling evaluation, production performance management, reserves assessment and economic analysis.
Supporting maturation of drilling opportunities is a major part of the role and requires close collaboration with geoscientists, production engineering, drilling, flow assurance, regulatory and commercial teams to optimize development options while balancing risks and uncertainties within a fit-for-purpose value assurance framework.
The Sr Reservoir Engineer will integrate reservoir engineering analysis, simulation, production data, pressure transient analysis, PVT data and economic evaluation to support development planning, portfolio prioritization, depletion strategy, well planning and opportunity progression. The role will document results and develop concise supporting presentations to clearly communicate recommendations to management, partners and regulatory authorities.
This role will work in our Houston Corporate office and may work up to two (2) days a week remote.
Responsibilities
  • Develop and evaluate deepwater field development plans, infill drilling opportunities, workovers and stimulation options using integrated reservoir, production, geoscience and economic analysis.
  • Monitor well and reservoir performance versus expectations; identify drivers of variance and recommend actions to protect base production and improve asset value.
  • Build, maintain and calibrate analytical and numerical reservoir models, including material balance, pressure transient analysis, PVT analysis and reservoir simulation.
  • Support pre-drill planning and well delivery by integrating uncertainty, reservoir risk, expected performance, reserves/resource impacts and economic outcomes into recommendations.
  • Partner with geoscience, production engineering, drilling, flow assurance, regulatory, commercial and partners to align technical work with business priorities and execution plans.
  • Support reserves, forecasting and portfolio management activities by tracking performance against booked reserves, documenting changes and framing development options for decision-making.
  • Prepare clear technical documentation and concise presentations that communicate assumptions, risks, recommendations and next steps to management, partners and regulatory authorities.
  • Promote quality data, transparent workflows and fit-for-purpose improvements to reservoir engineering tools, processes and integrated subsurface evaluations.

Qualifications/Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering; degree in Petroleum Engineering or related engineering discipline preferred.
  • Minimum 7 years' experience in Reservoir Engineering; deepwater Gulf of America experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience with field development studies and/or infill drilling evaluations, including uncertainty analysis and economic assessment.
  • Experience with reservoir simulation, network modeling, pressure transient analysis, PVT analysis, production forecasting and reserves evaluation.
  • Demonstrated experience with tNavigator/Eclipse, Kappa/Saphir, PVT/PVTsim, ValNav, MBal, Prosper, Power BI or similar software packages.
  • Experience working with multidisciplinary teams across geoscience, drilling, production, flow assurance, regulatory and commercial functions.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment is essential.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Desired/Preferred Qualifications
  • Background or direct experience in Production Engineering, including well performance surveillance, well potential, production constraints, workover/stimulation evaluation and root-cause analysis.
  • Experience with development planning, opportunity maturation, capital planning and portfolio management across producing assets or offshore projects.

The individual is required to follow all applicable safety precautions. Work is performed almost entirely in a controlled (i.e., inside) environment and does not typically subject the incumbent to any hazardoextreme elements; some positions may require regularly moving or transporting items weighing up to 25 lbs. around the office for various needs. The successful candidate must be able to complete all essential physical requirements of the job with or without reasonable accommodation.
