What does a Sr Reliability Engineer do?

A Sr Reliability Engineer is responsible for ensuring that products, systems, or processes operate reliably and efficiently over their expected lifecycle. They analyze failure data, develop reliability test plans, and implement strategies to predict and prevent failures. Their role often involves collaborating with design, manufacturing, and maintenance teams to improve product quality and reduce downtime. Additionally, they may use reliability modeling tools and statistical techniques to assess risk and recommend improvements. This position typically requires advanced engineering knowledge and experience in reliability engineering principles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Sr Reliability Engineer?

To thrive as a Sr Reliability Engineer, you need expertise in reliability engineering principles, root cause analysis, and a relevant engineering degree, often with several years of industry experience. Familiarity with reliability software (such as ReliaSoft or Minitab), maintenance management systems, and certifications like Certified Reliability Engineer (CRE) are commonly required. Strong problem-solving abilities, proactive communication, and leadership skills help you drive reliability initiatives and collaborate across teams. These competencies are vital to ensure equipment uptime, reduce failures, and improve operational efficiency in complex industrial environments.

How does a Sr Reliability Engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams to improve system reliability?

As a Sr Reliability Engineer, you will regularly work alongside operations, development, and QA teams to identify potential reliability risks and implement solutions. This often involves facilitating root cause analyses after incidents, sharing best practices, and leading reliability-focused design reviews. Effective communication and the ability to translate complex technical findings into actionable recommendations are key, as your insights directly influence infrastructure and product decisions. This collaborative approach helps foster a culture of reliability across the organization.

What is the difference between Sr Reliability Engineer vs Reliability Engineer?

AspectSr Reliability EngineerReliability Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's or higher in engineering, certifications like CRE or Six Sigma often preferredBachelor's degree in engineering or related field, similar certifications
Work EnvironmentTypically in manufacturing, energy, or tech industries focusing on system reliability and failure analysisSimilar industries, focusing on designing, testing, and improving product or system reliability
Employer UsageUsed in companies seeking experienced engineers to lead reliability projectsUsed for entry to mid-level roles focused on reliability assessments

The main difference is experience level and responsibility. Sr Reliability Engineers often lead projects and have more advanced certifications, while Reliability Engineers focus on supporting reliability tasks. Both roles require similar credentials and work in comparable environments, but the senior role involves more leadership and strategic planning.

Are senior reliability engineers in demand?

Senior reliability engineers are in high demand across industries such as manufacturing, energy, and technology due to their expertise in system maintenance, failure analysis, and predictive modeling. Companies seek experienced professionals with skills in data analysis, reliability tools, and certifications like Six Sigma or RCM to improve equipment uptime and reduce costs.

How much do Sr Reliability Engineers get paid?

Senior Reliability Engineers typically earn between $90,000 and $130,000 annually, depending on experience, industry, and location. They often have expertise in systems analysis, failure modes, and reliability tools like FMEA and RCM, which can influence compensation levels.

Job description

Skyways designs, builds, and operates fully autonomous long-range cargo aircraft. Founded in 2017, the company has spent the last eight years developing and deploying autonomous logistics systems for real-world operations.

Our V2 aircraft carries 30 lbs up to 500 miles, while our next-generation V3 carries 100 lbs over 1,000+ miles with 20+ hours of endurance. Both use a hybridโ€‘electric architecture that takes off like a helicopter and cruises like a plane, enabling longโ€‘range autonomous delivery without traditional runway infrastructure.

Today, Skyways aircraft operate across three continents in controlled national airspace under FAA oversight and in support of U.S. military operations. We are transitioning from prototype development to fullโ€‘rate production and scaling toward large autonomous cargo fleets.

Backed by Y Combinator and a $37M AFWERX STRATFI award from the U.S. Air Force, Skyways is creating a new form of transportation to advance our civilization from Austin, Texas.

The Opportunity

Skyways is hiring a Senior Reliability Engineer to lead technical investigations and drive closure of reliability issues across our active V2 and V3 aircraft fleets.

In this role, you will serve as the technical owner for Root Cause Corrective Action (RCCA) activities. You will work closely with Flight Test, Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Software Engineering, Manufacturing, and Operations teams to investigate failures, validate corrective actions, and improve fleet reliability.

If you enjoy solving difficult technical problems, digging through flight data, working handsโ€‘on with hardware, and collaborating across multiple disciplines to improve realโ€‘world aircraft performance, this is for you!

What Youโ€™ll Do
  • Lead the RCCA Lifecycle: Own the endโ€‘toโ€‘end investigation process for fleet reliability issues, from initial intake and rootโ€‘cause analysis through to implementation, validation, and permanent closure.
  • Drive Dataโ€‘Driven Insights: Analyze complex flight logs, telemetry, manufacturing, and maintenance data to identify systemic reliability trends and recurring failure modes.
  • Collaborate Across Disciplines: Partner with Flight Test, Manufacturing, Software, and Engineering teams to reproduce anomalies, conduct handsโ€‘on investigations, and deploy corrective actions.
  • Communicate & Document Findings: Author technical reports and RCCA documentation suitable for engineering reviews, leadership, and regulatory needs, ensuring clear communication of engineering decisions.
  • Improve Fleet Health: Proactively contribute to reliability metrics, continuous improvement initiatives, and design feedback loops to ensure lessons learned improve future aircraft performance.
What Youโ€™ll Bring
  • Bachelor's degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
  • 7+ years of engineering experience in aerospace, defense, autonomous systems, robotics, aviation, automotive, or other safetyโ€‘critical industries.
  • Strong troubleshooting and systemsโ€‘level problemโ€‘solving skills across hardware, software, and operational environments.
  • Experience applying investigation methodologies such as 8D, 5โ€‘Why, Fishbone, Fault Tree Analysis, Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA), or similar approaches.
  • Strong technical writing and communication skills with the ability to clearly communicate findings to engineers, leadership, customers, and external stakeholders.
  • Comfortable working handsโ€‘on with aircraft hardware, instrumentation, test equipment, and troubleshooting activities.
  • Proficiency with Python, SQL, or similar tools for data analysis and trend identification.
Bonus Points
  • Experience supporting unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), autonomous vehicles, or aviation platforms.
  • Familiarity with ArduPilot, PX4, MAVLink, DroneCAN, or comparable flightโ€‘control ecosystems.
  • Experience investigating avionics, GPS, navigation, communications, propulsion, powerโ€‘system, battery, or flightโ€‘control issues.
  • Experience with reliability engineering practices such as FRACAS, MTBF analysis, reliability growth tracking, and fleet health monitoring.
