What is a Sr Java Microservices developer?

Sr Java Microservices Developers are experienced software engineers who specialize in building and maintaining microservices-based applications using the Java programming language. They design, develop, and deploy scalable, distributed systems that allow different parts of an application to operate independently. Their expertise includes Java frameworks like Spring Boot, RESTful APIs, cloud platforms, and containerization technologies. Senior developers also mentor junior team members, ensure code quality, and help architect robust solutions to meet business requirements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Sr Java Microservices developer?

To thrive as a Sr Java Microservices Developer, you need advanced proficiency in Java, microservices architecture, RESTful APIs, and often a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with tools like Spring Boot, Docker, Kubernetes, and CI/CD platforms, as well as experience with cloud services such as AWS or Azure, is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and effective communication skills help you collaborate and deliver robust, scalable solutions. These competencies ensure the development of efficient, maintainable, and reliable software systems in dynamic enterprise environments.

What are some common challenges Sr Java Microservices developers face when transitioning from monolithic to microservices architectures?

Sr Java Microservices Developers often encounter challenges such as managing distributed system complexity, ensuring secure and reliable inter-service communication, and handling data consistency across services. Adapting to containerization and orchestration tools like Docker and Kubernetes, as well as implementing effective monitoring and logging for numerous services, can also be demanding. However, these challenges are balanced by opportunities to work with modern technologies and play a key role in architectural decision-making within cross-functional teams.

About your role:

Design, develop, and maintain backend Java applications and enterprise microservices that support scalable and secure business solutions. Partner with engineering, product, and DevOps teams to deliver reliable software using modern development practices and cloud-native technologies. This role matters by helping teams build high-quality services that improve performance, support growth, and meet business and technical requirements.

What you'll do:

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to gather requirements, define technical solutions, and implement scalable and maintainable backend services.
  • Contribute to architecture discussions and support the design of new features, enhancements, and system improvements with a focus on performance, scalability, and reliability.
  • Build and enhance event-driven microservices and distributed messaging solutions using Apache Kafka for business-critical processing workflows.
  • Partner with DevOps teams to support build automation, deployment, monitoring, and continuous integration and continuous deployment (CI/CD) practices.
  • Create and maintain technical documentation including system designs, application programming interface (API) specifications, and implementation details.
  • Perform unit testing, integration testing, code reviews, and release support activities to improve software quality and delivery consistency.
  • Participate in Agile ceremonies and contribute ideas that improve engineering practices, team processes, and software quality.
  • Responsibilities listed are not intended to be all-inclusive and may be modified as necessary.

Experience you'll need to have:

  • 5+ years of experience designing, developing, and maintaining Java-based enterprise applications in production environments.
  • 5+ years of experience building backend services or microservices using Java, Spring Boot, Spring Batch, Spring Cloud Stream, or similar enterprise frameworks.
  • 5+ years of experience designing and developing RESTful application programming interfaces (APIs) with attention to security, scalability, and maintainability.
  • 5+ years of experience working with Apache Kafka or similar distributed messaging platforms in asynchronous or event-driven architectures.
  • 5+ years of experience working with containerization and orchestration technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes for application deployment, scaling, and troubleshooting.
  • Experience with relational and non-relational databases such as MySQL, MongoDB, or similar platforms, including data access and query optimization.
  • Experience using Git and modern continuous integration and continuous deployment (CI/CD) tools in Agile software delivery environments.
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education, related experience and/or military experience.

Experience that would be great to have:

  • Experience with distributed systems design and high-volume event processing.
  • Experience with cloud-native application deployment and observability practices.
  • Experience with Scrum or other Agile delivery frameworks.
