Sr. Software Engineer (Azure Cosmos Ingestion)

Responsibilities

Design, build, test, and maintain Java 17 applications and shared components that load data into Azure Cosmos DB.

Engineer continuous and bulk ingestion patterns that can support hundreds of datasets, hundreds of gigabytes of daily data movement, and a multi-hundred-terabyte data estate.

Own end-to-end data correctness for Cosmos loads, including source-to-target reconciliation, record-count validation, duplicate prevention, update handling, deletion handling, and detection of partial or incomplete loads.

Design idempotent processing and safe recovery behavior for retries duplicate delivery, late-arriving data, out-of-order changes, pod termination, and partially completed batches.

Tune the Azure Cosmos DB SDK for bulk ingestion, including client lifecycle, connection settings, concurrency, batching, timeouts, retry behavior, and application-level back-pressure.

Monitor and troubleshoot request units, autoscale or provisioned throughput, HTTP 429 responses, hot partitions, latency, and uneven workload distribution.

Develop capacity and cost models using representative document sizes, indexing policies, operation types, daily volume, peak load, backfills, and reload scenarios.

Perform approved Cosmos container and data operations, including container creation or deletion, throughput changes, indexing or TTL changes, bulk corrections, reloads, and targeted data repair.

Build and maintain tools and procedures for reconciliation, replay, backfill, data correction, and post-restore recovery without creating duplicates or losing newer changes.

Create representative load, performance, and failure tests that validate throughput, cost, latency, throttling, retry behavior, correctness, and recovery at expected production scale.

Define and implement production observability for write volume, request charge, 429 rate, latency, queue depth and lag, success and failure counts, reconciliation mismatches, storage growth, and estimated cost.

Support Azure- and AKS-hosted workloads, including troubleshooting pod restarts, CPU or memory pressure, ephemeral storage, networking, I/O latency, connection pressure, and downstream service limits.

Collaborate with Cosmos platform, data-model, architecture, SRE, and downstream consumer teams on partitioning, document structure, indexing, capacity, query-related remediation, and operational ownership boundaries.

Establish reusable engineering patterns, documentation, dashboards, runbooks, and knowledge transfer so the capability can be supported by the broader team rather than a single specialist.

Deep hands-on experience with the Azure Cosmos DB Java SDK v4, including bulk execution and client diagnostics.

Experience operating Cosmos DB ingestion at a scale comparable to hundreds of gigabytes per day, multi-terabyte containers, or a data estate measured in tens or hundreds of terabytes.

Experience with Microsoft Entra workload identity, managed identity, Cosmos data-plane RBAC, private endpoints, and least-privilege access patterns.
