Job description

Overview
Tompkins Financial Advisors is the wealth management division of Tompkins Financial Corporation, an institution with roots dating to 1836 and a wealth advisory practice established in 1891. With advisor offices across New York, Pennsylvania, and Florida and more than $3 billion in assets under management, we have built a reputation on something that cannot be replicated quickly: the trust of families, sustained across generations.
Joining Tompkins means joining a team that takes the long view - because our clients do. We combine the resources and stability of a full-service financial institution with the personal attention and continuity that define a true advisory relationship.
Position Role
The Senior Financial Planner is the financial planning subject matter expert within the client strategy team at Tompkins Financial Advisors - technically rigorous, client-facing, and adept at driving planning engagement with advisors and clients across a designated market. Working alongside Wealth Advisors and Trust Officers, this role owns the financial planning process from initial analysis through delivery, implementation, and ongoing review, with support extending across the firm's enterprise footprint where needed.
The Senior Financial Planner exercises genuine professional judgement in developing plans that address complex, multi-generational financial situations, and serves as a trusted planning resource across the wealth management team.
Responsibilities
  • Drive planning engagement across the Central New York market - proactively identifying opportunities for clients and prospects and partnering with Wealth Advisors to advance planning conversations
  • Use the firm's planning platforms to build comprehensive financial models and deliver written recommendations that translate complex situations into clear, actionable guidance
  • Present financial plans in client meetings with authority, fielding questions with confidence and connecting each recommendation clearly to the client's goals and circumstances
  • Monitor plan progress and conduct regular reviews, adjusting recommendations in response to market developments, regulatory changes, and evolving client circumstances
  • Work alongside Wealth Advisors and Trust Officers as a member of each client's strategy team, contributing discovery context and planning depth that inform and strengthen client conversations
  • Serve as a planning resource across the wealth management team, supporting colleagues on complex cases and contributing current knowledge to team discussions and strategy sessions
  • Bring planning expertise to prospect and referral conversations - including introductions from Tompkins Community Bank banking partners - in support of the advisory team's client development efforts
  • Maintain substantive, current knowledge across financial planning, tax, estate, and investment disciplines, pursuing continuing education consistent with CFP® designation requirements

All planning work is conduced in accordance with applicable regulatory requirements, firm policy and the firm's standards of client confidentiality and professional integrity.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in finance, business, or a related field required
  • Minimum of five (5) years of progressive experience in financial planning, wealth advisory, trust, investment, or a closely related client-facing advisory role required, including demonstrated experience handling complex client situations.
  • CFP® (Certified Financial Planner®) designation strongly preferred; CPA, CFA, CTFA, or comparable advanced credential with relevant planning experience may be considered.
  • Demonstrated success leading comprehensive financial plans for clients with complex, high-net-worth, business owner, executive, retirement, estate, charitable, or multi-generational planning needs.
  • Proficiency in financial planning software; experience with eMoney or similar platforms preferred
  • Strong analytical, research, and critical thinking skills with the ability to interpret findings and communicate recommendations effectively
  • Proven ability to present complex financial information clearly to clients and stakeholders
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor colleagues, influence planning standards, and maintain current knowledge of financial planning, tax, estate, investment, risk management, and regulatory disciplines through ongoing professional development.
