Job description

Panametrics, a leader in industrial measurement solutions, is seeking a Senior Embedded Software Engineer to provide technical leadership in the development of embedded systems, real-time software, and signal processing solutions that enable next-generation ultrasonic flow measurement and sensing platforms for critical industrial applications. This is a hands‑on, individual contributor role focused on embedded software architecture, firmware development, hardware‑software integration, and technical leadership.

About the Role

In this highly cross‑functional role, you will help shape the future of the Panametrics product portfolio by serving as the technical owner for major embedded software initiatives throughout the product lifecycle. You will work within a multidisciplinary engineering organization consisting of embedded software, FPGA, hardware, systems, and test engineers and serve as a key embedded software technical leader across multiple product development programs. This position is based in Billerica, MA and requires regular on‑site presence.

As a Senior Embedded Software Engineer, you will be responsible for:

  • Designing, developing, integrating, and maintaining embedded firmware and software solutions for industrial measurement products.
  • Translating system and product requirements into robust, maintainable software architectures and designs.
  • Collaborating closely with hardware, FPGA, systems, and test engineering teams throughout the product development lifecycle.
  • Driving hardware‑software integration, system validation, performance optimization, debugging, and root‑cause resolution activities from prototype development through production release.
  • Participating in technical design reviews and peer code reviews to ensure software quality and maintainability.
  • Developing and executing software verification strategies, including unit testing, integration testing, and system validation.
  • Mentoring junior engineers and promoting software development best practices within the engineering team.
  • Promoting and supporting Agile development practices, sprint planning, estimation, and continuous improvement initiatives to support predictable and high‑quality software delivery.
  • Evaluating technical tradeoffs, managing software‑related technical risks, and driving informed engineering decisions throughout the product lifecycle.
What We’re Looking For:
  • BS/MS in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related field.
  • 8+ years of embedded software development experience.
  • Advanced proficiency in C/C++ programming.
  • Strong experience with embedded operating systems, RTOS concepts, and real‑time software development.
  • Strong understanding of interrupt‑driven software, concurrency, memory management, and deterministic real‑time system behavior.
  • Experience developing low‑level embedded software, including device drivers, board support packages (BSPs), middleware, and hardware abstraction layers (HALs).
  • Experience interfacing with embedded peripherals and communication protocols, including SPI, I2C, UART, Ethernet, GPIO, DMA, ADC, and DAC subsystems.
  • Experience with ARM Cortex‑A/R/M processor architectures, including AMD/Xilinx Zynq UltraScale+ MPSoC platforms or similar heterogeneous hardware/software systems.
  • Experience with board bring‑up, processor initialization, and hardware validation activities.
  • Experience working in Agile development environments and applying modern software engineering practices, including source control, code reviews, automated testing, continuous integration, and software quality processes.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with FPGA‑based systems and FPGA/software integration.
  • Experience with FreeRTOS, VxWorks, ThreadX, Micrium, or similar RTOS platforms.
  • Experience with secure boot, trusted execution environments, cybersecurity, and system hardening techniques.
  • Experience with embedded Linux and bare‑metal software development.
  • Experience with DSP concepts and embedded signal processing techniques for real‑time filtering, detection, and measurement applications.
  • Experience with modern development workflows, including CI/CD pipelines, peer reviews, static analysis, software quality metrics, and configuration management practices using tools such as Git, Rally, and related development toolchains.
  • Experience in industrial instrumentation, sensing, flow measurement, aerospace, defense, or other high‑reliability environments.
  • Prior experience serving as a technical lead, architect, or engineering subject matter expert.
  • Experience with IAR Embedded Workbench for ARM (EWARM), JTAG debuggers, and embedded software debugging tools.
