What does a Sr Applications Engineer do?

A Sr Applications Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and implementing software or technical solutions tailored to meet client or organizational needs. They work closely with customers, product managers, and development teams to understand requirements and provide technical expertise throughout the product lifecycle. Their duties often include troubleshooting complex issues, optimizing application performance, and mentoring junior engineers. This role requires strong problem-solving skills, technical proficiency, and effective communication to bridge the gap between technical teams and end-users.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Sr Applications Engineer?

To thrive as a Sr Applications Engineer, you need deep expertise in software development, systems integration, and relevant engineering principles, usually backed by a bachelor's or master's degree in engineering or computer science. Familiarity with programming languages such as Java, Python, or C++, and experience with tools like CAD software, APIs, and cloud platforms are commonly required. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and project management skills help you collaborate with cross-functional teams and manage complex client requirements. These competencies are crucial for delivering robust technical solutions that meet business objectives and ensure customer satisfaction.

How does a Sr Applications Engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a product development cycle?

Sr Applications Engineers often serve as a technical bridge between engineering, sales, and customer support teams. They participate in requirements gathering sessions, provide technical expertise during design reviews, and support the integration of products into customer environments. Effective collaboration involves regular meetings with product managers, feedback sessions with customers, and close coordination with R&D to resolve technical challenges quickly. This cross-functional interaction not only ensures the final product meets client needs but also provides opportunities to develop leadership and project management skills.

Job Information

HyAxiom is seeking an experienced Sr.Applications Engineer to develop standard fuel cell-centered energy solutions and customize those solutions for customer projects.

This role has two primary areas of responsibility:

  1. Standard Solution Development: Work with internal teams and technology providers to create repeatable microgrid architectures integrating HyAxiom fuel cells with energy storage, switchgear, power electronics, controls, utility connections, and other balance-of-system technologies.
  2. Customer Solution Development: Work directly with customers, utilities, developers, consultants, and EPC partners to adapt standard architectures to each project's load profile, site conditions, reliability targets, commercial objectives, and interconnection requirements.

These systems will use fuel cells as the primary source of clean, reliable power, supported by energy storage and utility infrastructure as required. Solutions must deliver the resiliency, reliability, and power quality needed by data centers and AI factories, including operation through rapid and significant load transients. The original posting similarly establishes fuel cells as a primary power source and emphasizes scalable, sustainable, and reliable data center power.

Role & Responsibility
  • Develop standardized microgrid solutions centered on HyAxiom fuel cell products and integrated with energy storage, switchgear, controls, power electronics, and utility infrastructure.
  • Collaborate with technology providers and internal product and engineering teams to define repeatable system architectures, interfaces, operating philosophies, and equipment requirements.
  • Translate customer load profiles, reliability requirements, site constraints, and commercial objectives into project-specific technical solutions.
  • Design systems that provide continuous, resilient, and high-quality primary power through AI-factory load transients and other rapidly changing demand conditions.
  • Define appropriate redundancy, energy storage, controls, and utility support to meet project-specific availability and resiliency requirements.
  • Lead technical evaluations related to utility interconnection, grid rules, grid codes, synchronization, protection, and grid-connected or islanded operation.
  • Support system sizing, load analysis, technical proposals, customer presentations, and project development activities including oversight of PSCAD/CHILS modeling
  • Work directly with customers, utilities, developers, consultants, EPCs, and equipment providers from concept development through commissioning.
  • Capture project experience and customer requirements to improve standard solutions and future product offerings.
  • Support commissioning, troubleshooting, performance validation, and optimization of deployed systems.
Job Requirement - Qualifications
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, Renewable Energy, or a related discipline.
  • 10+ years of experience in electric utilities, distributed generation, onsite generation, energy storage, microgrids, commercial power systems, or independent power production.
  • Demonstrated experience working directly with customers to develop power and control solutions for project-specific technical and commercial needs.
  • Demonstrated utility experience or strong knowledge of utility power-system planning and operation.
  • Ability to evaluate load profiles, transient performance, power quality, reliability, resilience, and redundancy requirements.
  • Experience collaborating with technology providers to develop integrated energy solutions and standardized system architectures.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, technical presentation, and stakeholder communication skills including the ability to break down problems into first principles.

The original qualifications call for microgrid or utility experience, knowledge of fuel cells and storage, power electronics, EMS, modeling, data center energy distribution, reliability, resilience, and multidisciplinary communication. The revised criteria retain those foundations while increasing the required experience and sharpening the utility and customer-facing emphasis. 1

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with fuel cells, power generation systems, battery energy storage systems (BESS), distributed energy resources, and microgrid technologies.
  • Working knowledge of utility planning, interconnection processes, tariffs, grid requirements, grid services, and applicable utility rules and standards.
  • Experience collaborating with technology providers, EPCs, developers, utilities, consultants, and other project stakeholders to develop and execute integrated energy solutions.
  • Familiarity with energy management systems, power system modeling tools (CHILS, PSCAD, ETC), behind-the-meter energy economics, load management, energy optimization strategies, and cybersecurity considerations for connected energy systems.
  • Experience with data centers, AI factories, or other mission-critical power infrastructure, and possession of a Professional Engineer (PE) license or relevant power, energy, or microgrid certification.
Other

Work Environment:

  • Occasional travel to customer and project sites for technical development, integration, commissioning, and troubleshooting.
  • Work arrangements may vary based on project requirements.
