What are some common challenges faced by professionals in SQL Server maintenance, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in SQL Server maintenance often encounter challenges such as managing database performance, ensuring data security, and minimizing downtime during updates or backups. Addressing these issues typically involves regularly monitoring server health, applying the latest patches, and automating routine tasks where possible. Collaboration with development and IT teams is crucial for troubleshooting issues and implementing best practices, leading to a more efficient and secure database environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in SQL Server Maintenance, and why are they important?

To thrive in SQL Server Maintenance, you need a solid understanding of database administration, SQL querying, and backup and recovery procedures, often backed by a degree in computer science or related certifications like Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate. Familiarity with SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS), monitoring tools, and scripting languages such as PowerShell is typically required. These skills ensure database reliability, performance, and security, supporting uninterrupted business operations.

What is SQL Server Maintenance?

SQL Server Maintenance refers to the regular tasks and processes needed to ensure that a Microsoft SQL Server database runs smoothly, efficiently, and securely. These tasks can include database backups, index optimization, updating statistics, integrity checks, and monitoring performance. Proper maintenance helps prevent data loss, improves query speed, and reduces the chances of system failures. Regular maintenance is essential for organizations that rely on SQL Server for storing and managing critical data.

Job description

Be Part Of A High-Performing Team:

Join a fast-moving technology team supporting mission-critical SQL Server platforms in a growing industrial services organization. This environment supports ongoing business onboarding, legacy database modernization, data integration, production performance, and future cloud migration initiatives. The team operates with a lean, hands-on model where strong database professionals are trusted to own solutions, troubleshoot independently, and help improve how data moves across systems. This is a high-impact role for someone who enjoys broad SQL Server ownership, practical problem-solving, and contributing to future-state data platform improvements.

What's In Store For You:

This is a contract-to-hire opportunity with a mostly remote work model and required onsite collaboration in Charlotte, NC for approximately four days per month, typically Monday through Thursday. Occasional additional onsite needs may arise for key meetings, deployments, implementations, or production-impacting projects. The role offers the opportunity to work in a broad SQL Server environment, support cloud transition efforts, and become a trusted technical resource across database development, integration, tuning, and automation.

How You Will Make An Impact

  • Develop, maintain, and optimize SQL Server solutions that support core business operations, new business onboarding, and enterprise data movement.
  • Build and support SSIS packages and SQL-based automation used to move data between SQL Server, files, ERP systems, third-party applications, and other data platforms.
  • Write, review, and tune complex T-SQL including stored procedures, views, tables, functions, CTEs, dynamic SQL, and set-based logic.
  • Troubleshoot performance issues across queries, packages, reports, and production SQL workloads.
  • Review SQL code and report queries from analysts, developers, and ERP teams before production release to ensure they are efficient and safe for the environment.
  • Support future cloud data initiatives, including migration toward Azure Data Factory and cloud-based production processes.
  • Assist with database design when new databases, tables, dimensions, or data structures need to be built.
  • Participate in change meetings, deployments, implementations, and occasional after-hours production work when updates or interruptions cannot occur during business hours.
  • Work independently in a lean environment where strong ownership, resourcefulness, and problem-solving are essential.

Do you bring proven success in SQL Server development, SSIS, and production database support?

  • 8+ years of SQL Server development experience preferred; strong candidates with 6+ years may be considered if they show deep hands-on capability.
  • Strong T-SQL development skills, including stored procedures, views, tables, CTEs, dynamic SQL, functions, and performance-conscious query design.
  • Strong SSIS experience for ETL, data movement, file ingestion, package maintenance, and SQL Server integration workflows.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and improve SQL Server performance using query review, execution plans, indexing concepts, and production-impact analysis.
  • Experience moving data between SQL Server and sources such as Excel files, CSV/text files, ERP systems, Snowflake, or other databases is highly valuable.
  • Azure Data Factory experience is a plus, but strong SSIS candidates who are motivated to learn cloud tools will be considered.
  • Familiarity with SQL Server versions across legacy and modern environments, especially SQL Server 2012 and newer.
  • Ability to work independently, research unfamiliar issues, and solve problems without heavy handholding.
  • Comfortable presenting changes in technical meetings and collaborating with IT teams during implementations.
  • Willingness to support occasional night or weekend deployments, updates, or production-impacting changes.
  • Ability to work onsite in Charlotte, NC approximately four days per month.
  • Bonus: Epicor P21 ERP familiarity, Snowflake exposure, or experience in a smaller/mid-sized technology environment.Â
