Job Title: SQL Database Administrator
Location: New York, NY (Hybrid - 3 days onsite or as needed)
Duration: 12 Months (with potential for extension)

Overview:
We are seeking a SQL Database Administrator who will support our NYS client.
This role is responsible for designing, implementing, maintaining, tuning, and optimizing Microsoft SQL Server and Azure SQL Managed Instance databases to support MTA application and system availability requirements. The SQL Database Administrator will partner with infrastructure, application development, and other IT teams to strengthen database performance, security, availability, backup and recovery, and operational reliability.
Duties:
  • Design, implement, configure, and maintain Microsoft SQL Server and Azure SQL Managed Instance database environments.
  • Perform database and SQL Server installations, upgrades, migrations, patching coordination, and ongoing maintenance.
  • Monitor, tune, and optimize database performance, including SQL query performance and database resource utilization.
  • Troubleshoot and remediate database-related issues in collaboration with system, network, application, and help desk teams.
  • Implement and maintain database security, access controls, and compliance requirements in accordance with MTA policies and standards.
  • Develop, test, document, and maintain database backup, recovery, and high-availability strategies, including Always On configurations.
  • Support data process flows, data modeling, data migrations, and database requirements for application development and enterprise systems.
  • Develop and maintain procedures, standards, technical documentation, system records, and automation used to support database operations.
  • Evaluate database products and technologies, contribute to database infrastructure planning, and provide input on technology direction and implementation impact.
  • Provide advanced technical direction and guidance to less senior database technicians and staff.

Mandatory Qualifications:
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience as a SQL Server Database Administrator.
  • 8+ years of experience installing, maintaining, administering, and supporting computer hardware, UNIX/Linux/Windows operating systems, and database products such as Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server.
  • Expert knowledge of Windows Server, Microsoft SQL Server, Microsoft Azure, SQL Managed Instance, Azure Storage accounts, and Azure security fundamentals.
  • Experience implementing high-availability database solutions, including SQL Server Always On.
  • Strong SQL knowledge and advanced experience installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting database technologies and related infrastructure.
  • Advanced knowledge of computer hardware, operating system software, and storage area network technologies as they relate to database installation and performance.
  • Advanced knowledge of shell scripting and general-purpose programming used to automate database administration tasks.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and support technical issues both remotely and onsite using standard enterprise tools and techniques.
  • Ability to read and understand schematic diagrams, technical manuals, and technical documentation supporting database systems and related equipment.
  • Strong oral and written communication, analytical, problem-solving, and people skills.
  • Ability to plan technical activities, design and engineer solutions and standards, and provide advanced technical direction to less senior staff.
  • Bachelor''s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related discipline; or a minimum of 10 years of experience in programming, systems administration, and/or database administration disciplines.
 
Desirable Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of Python for database administration and automation.
  • Microsoft technology certifications.
