Familiarity with tools such as Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, MySQL, and certifications like Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate are often required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you troubleshoot issues and collaborate with other IT professionals. These competencies ensure data integrity, optimal performance, and the successful implementation of database solutions for business needs.

What is a SQL database developer?

SQL Database Developers are IT professionals who design, develop, and maintain databases using SQL (Structured Query Language). They are responsible for writing queries, optimizing database performance, creating database structures, and ensuring data integrity and security. These developers often collaborate with other software engineers and analysts to support application development and business intelligence. Their role is critical in managing large volumes of data efficiently and ensuring that databases meet organizational needs.

How does a SQL database developer typically collaborate with other IT professionals within an organization?

SQL Database Developers frequently work alongside software engineers, data analysts, and system administrators to design, implement, and optimize database solutions. They are often involved in cross-functional meetings to gather requirements, address performance concerns, and ensure data integrity. Effective communication is key, as developers must translate business needs into technical specifications and work with others to maintain seamless data flow across applications. Collaboration tools and version control systems are commonly used to track changes and facilitate teamwork.

Job description

Database Engineer
Who We Are
US Cold owns and operates one of the most complex temperature-controlled logistics networks in North America. Every day, our systems coordinate the storage and movement of food on a national scale across a network of state-of-the-art distribution centers, including multiple highly automated warehouse facilities.
We continue to advance our core warehouse and logistics platforms. Our current focus is on modular, event-driven, API-first and cloud architecture. We continue to enhance reliability and accelerate engineering productivity by strengthening our SRE and AI practices. This is a large investment in innovation to continue to drive operational excellence at our facilities.
If you want to build durable systems that operate in the physical world on a scale, this is that opportunity.
The Job Details
The Database Engineer owns the health, performance, and evolution of the database platforms behind US Cold Storage's warehouse management systems - both the existing Oracle databases and the PostgreSQL and MongoDB Atlas systems powering our next-gen microservices platform in Azure. You'll partner with Infrastructure, DevOps, and Software Engineering to design, implement, and scale database systems while reducing operational toil through CI/CD. You'll also provide real-time support for mission-critical workloads where downtime translates directly to disrupted shipments.
Responsibilities
  • Monitor, patch, and maintain our existing Oracle database infrastructure on OCI, ensuring uptime and reliability for production workloads
  • Tune and optimize Oracle performance through query plan analysis, indexing strategies, and schema-level improvements to meet performance standards
  • Architect, deploy, and manage our modern cloud-based database systems in Azure, including PostgreSQL and MongoDB in support of our modernization initiative
  • Own HA/DR posture across intra-region and cross-region failure scenarios, including defining and validating RPO/RTO targets with the business
  • Partner with DevOps, Development, and Infrastructure teams to ensure database architecture supports application performance targets while managing cloud spend
  • Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines in GitHub Actions and Jenkins to automate schema migrations, environment provisioning, and routine operational tasks
  • Implement and own database observability - query performance monitoring, capacity forecasting, and cost optimization across cloud platforms
  • Provide real-time production support for mission-critical database workloads, including on-call participation and incident response

Technical Environment
  • Azure and OCI Multi-Region Infrastructure
  • Oracle (OCI), PostgreSQL and MongoDB Atlas (Azure)
  • Infrastructure as Code using Terraform and Ansible
  • GitHub Actions and Jenkins for CI/CD
  • Observability using Dynatrace and Azure Monitor

What We're Looking For
  • 5+ years of experience as a DBA or Database Engineer, with strong proficiency in Oracle and PostgreSQL
  • Fluency in PL/SQL, including designing and optimizing performant queries
  • Experience with NoSQL/JSON databases a plus
  • Proven ability to diagnose database-related application issues including performance bottlenecks, locking and replication delays
  • Experience managing database infrastructure in the cloud (Azure preferred)
  • Experience deploying database systems using Infrastructure as Code (Terraform or similar) and CI/CD tooling (Jenkins, GitHub Actions or similar)
  • Track record building monitoring and alerting for critical database operations (Dynatrace or Azure Monitor a plus)
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to tailor the message to technical and non-technical audiences
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field-or equivalent experience

Why This Role Is Different
  • You will deploy, monitor and tune multiple database types (Oracle, PostgreSQL, MongoDB) across multiple clouds (Azure and OCI)
  • You will use AI-assisted tools (Dynatrace, Azure Monitor, Copilot) to monitor and optimize performance while forecasting and managing cost
  • Your decisions will have an immediate impact on our teams, our systems, and the warehouses moving food across the country

Compensation & Structure
  • Salary Range: $110,000 - $140,000/yr
  • Location: Hybrid, Camden, NJ
  • Travel: Less than 10%
  • Reports to: Platform Lead, Software Development
