What is a sports science intern?

Sports Science Interns are students or recent graduates who assist sports scientists, coaches, and athletes by supporting research, data collection, and performance analysis. Their responsibilities often include monitoring training sessions, analyzing athletic performance, and helping implement sports science strategies to improve athletic outcomes. Interns gain hands-on experience with testing equipment, data management, and working collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams. This role is ideal for those seeking practical experience in sports science before pursuing advanced roles or further education.

What do sports science interns do?

As a Sports Science Intern, you can expect to be involved in a variety of hands-on tasks such as assisting with athlete performance testing, collecting and analyzing physiological data, supporting injury prevention programs, and helping to implement training protocols. Interns often collaborate closely with coaches, athletic trainers, and senior sports scientists, gaining exposure to both fieldwork and laboratory settings. This role is a great opportunity to develop practical skills, contribute to team-based projects, and gain insights into the daily operations of sports performance departments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a sports science intern?

To thrive as a Sports Science Intern, you need a solid understanding of exercise physiology, biomechanics, and data analysis, often supported by coursework in sports science or a related field. Familiarity with lab equipment, performance testing tools, and software like Excel or SPSS is typically required. Strong communication, teamwork, and attention to detail are essential soft skills for collaborating with coaches and athletes. These competencies ensure accurate data collection, effective support for research projects, and meaningful contributions to athlete development.
