Job description

Overview
The Sports Director provides leadership, management, and oversight for all youth and adult sports programming at the YMCA of Pueblo. This position is responsible for the development, implementation, promotion, and evaluation of sports programs that provide exceptional participant experiences while advancing the YMCA mission.
The Sports Director supervises sports staff, coaches, officials, and volunteers while ensuring safe, inclusive, and high-quality programming that meets community needs and organizational goals. This role works closely with schools, community organizations, and partners to expand the reach and impact of YMCA sports programming throughout Pueblo.
This position regularly works in gymnasiums, athletic fields, recreation spaces, and outdoor environments. Evening and weekend work is required based on program schedules and events.

Responsibilities
Program Leadership & Development
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate youth and adult sports programs including leagues, clinics, camps, tournaments, and special events.
  • Monitor participation, retention, and member satisfaction metrics.
  • Identify opportunities for program growth and innovation.
  • Develop seasonal schedules and program offerings aligned with community needs.
  • Promote and market sports programs to maximize participation and impact.
  • Recruit and organize volunteers in ordinance with Praesidium guidelines.

Staff Leadership
  • Recruit, hire, train, supervise, schedule, and evaluate sports staff and volunteers.
  • Conduct regular staff meetings, trainings, and coach orientations.
  • Provide leadership development and ongoing feedback to staff.
  • Ensure all staff certifications and required trainings remain current.

Operations & Risk Management
  • Manage gym schedules, field schedules, and facility usage in coordination with other departments.
  • Maintain inventory and oversee ordering of sports equipment and supplies.
  • Ensure compliance with YMCA policies, safety standards, and risk management procedures.
  • Maintain incident reports and emergency action plans.

Community Engagement
  • Develop relationships with schools, youth organizations, and community partners.
  • Represent the YMCA at community events and outreach activities.
  • Assist with YMCA fundraising efforts including the Annual Campaign and youth sports sponsorship opportunities.

Additional Responsibilities
  • Serve as a role model by demonstrating YMCA mission and values.
  • Participate in association meetings and trainings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Senior Program Director or Chief Operations Officer.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Must be able to:
  • Lift and move up to 50 pounds.
  • Set up and tear down sports equipment.
  • Stand, walk, bend, kneel, and move throughout indoor and outdoor facilities.
  • Respond quickly in emergency situations.
  • Work in different climate and weather conditions.

Qualifications
  • Minimum age of 18 years.
  • Bachelor's degree in Sports Management, Recreation, Physical Education, or related field preferred.
  • Minimum of two years of experience in sports programming, recreation management, or related YMCA work.
  • Minimum of one year of supervisory experience preferred.
  • CPR/AED and First Aid certification required within a designated timeframe.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with participants, parents, members, staff, and community partners.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple programs and priorities simultaneously.
  • Ability to respond appropriately to emergencies and critical incidents.
