Job description


The Sports Performance Intern is a 10-month position reporting to the Director of Sports Performance. The Sports Performance Intern will assist the Director of Sports Performance in providing direction for all student-athletes and coaches in the design and implementation of all- inclusive strength, speed, agility and conditioning programs. The Sports Performance Intern will assist in providing direction during training sessions, maintaining a clean and safe facility, communicating with the sports medicine staff and keeping records of athlete progress.
Responsibilities
• Assist in the development and implementation of sport-specific athletic performance programs that entail the development of muscular strength, explosive power and speed, multi-directional agility, and conditioning for all sports;
• Assist in the evaluation all incoming student-athletes on an annual basis to determine level of training and safety;
• Assist in the scheduling and supervision of team training sessions and instruction of student-athletes in proper technique, with a primary focus on reducing non-contact sports-related injuries and maximizing competitive performance;
• Interact and correspond with head coaches regarding sport-specific programs designed for their teams and report performance progress to student-athletes and head coaches;
• Communicate with and assist the sports medicine staff and administrators with issues related to overall student-athlete wellness;
• Support and assist the sports medicine staff with the rehabilitation of student-athlete injuries as needed;
• Consistently educate on proper sports nutrition/hydration/physical recovery strategies and offer sports nutritional counseling to all student-athletes;
• Maintain an up-to-date certifications;
• Other related duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Director of Sports Performance.
Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree in -or related to- exercise physiology;
  • Adult CPR/AED certified;
  • CSCS, CSCCa, USAW, or equivalent certification;
  • Some experience in collegiate strength & conditioning training, personal training, or strength and fitness instruction at any level.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Master's degree;
  • Experience in a collegiate athletics department.

  • Positive, enthusiastic approach to job responsibilities;
  • Demonstrated ability to work within a team, placing departmental and institutional priorities and student-athlete well-being above personal advancement.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Work is primarily performed on a in weight room setting, but also in gym, on track, on field, or other open areas where conditioning training can occur. Working early mornings, evenings, and weekends is required. Essential functions of this position require lifting, manual dexterity, large motor skills, ability to communicate. Occasional lifting and carrying objects of 100 pounds or more; frequent lifting and carrying, pushing, or pulling objects weighing 200 pounds or more; and/or continuous lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling 10-350 pounds. Utilizes memory for details, verbal instructions.
